Installing locks can be a tricky process at best. Security is critical, whether speaking of your home or your business. Incorrect lock installation can result in a security breach.  How do you know when NOT to do-it-yourself?

Installing locks can be a tricky process at best. Security is critical, whether speaking of your home or your business. Incorrect lock installation can result in a security breach. Worse, it may even lead to home invasion (break-and-enter while residents are at home.) Lives, possessions and livelihood may
be threatened. Installing locks must be done with precision, and should be done right the first time. How do you know when NOT to do-it-yourself?

The most important rule of thumb when it comes to any do-it-yourself project: if you have any doubts at all about your ability to see the project through from start to finish, don't start at all. You can't afford to make mistakes when your life and property is at stake. You also can't afford to start installing locks, only to discover halfway through that you're in over your head. Calling in a professional partway through a job may take time, leaving life and possessions vulnerable until such a time that a professional is available. It probably isn't worth the risk.

Another consideration you should make when it comes to installing locks is the type of lock you are using. Some types of locks, such as cylindrical locks, are easier and more straightforward to install than a mortise lock. Cylindrical lock installation requires less cutting and drilling than mortise lock installation. Mortise locks necessitate the cutting of a cavity inside the doorframe. This requires at least a basic knowledge of woodworking, something the average do-it-yourselfer doesn't necessarily have.

If you think you're up to installing locks yourself, consider this checklist BEFORE you begin:

1) Read the installation instructions carefully. Read them before you purchase the product, if possible. Make sure you know ahead of time what materials and tools will be required. This includes which materials are included in the lock set, and which ones you may have to purchase separately. If any part of the directions is unclear to you, ask for help from a sales associate, see if you can find an online tutorial, or call the customer service hotline of the manufacturer. It's critical that you understand the directions before determining whether you're up to the job or not.

2) Read and understand the warranty/guarantee. Most lock products come with some type of a warranty. However, the warranty may become invalid if the lock has broken or has malfunctioned because of incorrect lock installation. Don't inadvertently void your own product warranty.

3) Consult with an expert, or at least a more experienced do-it-yourselfer. If you know someone in the lock installation business that is willing to give free advice, talk over your project with him/her first. Or do the same with another do-it-yourselfer who has undertaken a similar project before. Chances are that he or she will have some excellent insights and pointers about your project that might make it easier and more successful.

4) Check your insurance. Make sure your renters/homeowner's or business insurance will still cover a break-in even if you install locks yourself. This is particularly important with commercial lock installation. Few things are more heartbreaking than being denied coverage for a break-in because you didn't read the fine print on your insurance contract.

Remember , once you've cut that mortise cavity or drilled those screw holes there's no turning back. Make sure you're adequately prepared and fully armed with information before installing locks on your home or business.

Hints and tips on choosing a fence for security and decoration. Find information on security fencing, decorative fencing, wood fencing, steel fencing and more

There are so many choices of fence in today's market that it can be difficult to choose the right one. However one of the more popular types that has become more prevalent recently is that of rolled wood fencing. This article will take a look at why this type has become so popular and the things you need to consider before buying it.

The first point is that thi
type of fencing is totally natural, and that is great when you're trying to install a fence that needs to fit in with the natural surroundings as much as possible. Some people go for a synthetic rolled fence, but this really does not have the same appeal. Having natural elements in the garden is one of the best things you can do.

Another thing to bear in mind is that this type of fencing is very easy to install, since all you need to do is fix the fence posts and then the fencing itself can be strung between the posts very easily. This can be a job which come be done by most people, so you do not need to hire a professional, which means you can save money.

Compared to other types of fencing, rolled wood fencing can actually be very cheap, and although it does not have the same security as say, a fence made with strong panels, it can still be used to keep a garden secure if it is high enough.

So if you are looking for some new garden fencing, don't think you need to spend a lot of money or have to opt for a synthetic type of fence. Rolled wood fencing can be a great choice , and each is used properly you get a natural fence which can also be secure at the same time.

It takes several key components to set up a successful salt-water aquarium to garner success. Correct PH levels, the right high bay lights and the right coral reef set up are all key components you'll need to research to ensure a copasetic environment for your marine life.

The most important set up tip you can get is to gain as much information as you can concerning the proper PH levels for marine salt-water aquariums. No matter how pretty your set up is, if your water levels are out of control your marine life will not
e alive for long. In general the larger the tank the less likely you are to have spikes in PH levels. The minimum suggested size for a marine tank is 30 gallons and preferably higher. Anything less than 30 gallons and you'll spend as much time checking water quality as you do watching your fish. Maintaining proper salt levels will help to ensure you maintain a healthy environment for your under water world.

Lighting is also a major key in maintaining a healthy living environment for your marine life. Most people who want a well-balanced salt-water tank want some level of a coral reef. This is needed to sustain that balance. If you don't want a reef then lighting is not as essential but if you do, then going with , proper filtration of the water is key to success.

Maintaining a marine tank will always be more labor intensive then a fresh water tank but you'll rarely see anything in fresh water nature that compares to the majestic flow of marine life and coral reefs. The benefits out weigh the work involved in maintaining a reef tank.

An Insight21 resource for high quality organic gardening information.

When presented with the notion that biodynamic gardening and farming is an exceptional forum with advanced methods, one scientist scoffed, saying "You're not espousing a system that plants by the phases of the moon, and such, are you?!"

This "scientist" fails in his profession the moment he makes such a comment.  I was tempted to respond with, "Where were you when the calendar went beyond the 1950s?!"  A true scientist does his research before
making statements.  Had this individual looked for it, he would have found irrefutable evidence from scientific research that has found, indeed, that the phases of the moon have a significant impact on many gardening operations, including ideal times to sow seed, or to transplant, and for most gardening operations.  The world of nature holds a treasure trove of secrets, to be harvested for those who can stay the distance, who can penetrate into the deeper resources.

Other noteworthy aspects of Biodynamic methods:

The Biodynamic system was inaugurated in 1924 by Austrian spiritual scientist Rudolf Steiner, as a system that not only embraces the living ecology of the soil, but goes further, into the interaction of elements of the cosmos on the plant community.

You could say that to the degree "organic" food rises above mainstream food, so does biodynamic rise above organic  - meaning it's produce is even more vital and nutritious.  Soil and plants are not only physically enriched, but are enhanced on the etheric level  - in effect, aided to evolve to a higher state.

Homeopathic preparations are one of the devices used to accomplish this enhancement.  Sometimes they are implanted in the soil, other times applied as a spray.

A quote from the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association:

"Rudolf Steiner presents a notion of science that says we can know things that go beyond what we can weigh, measure, and calculate. Science is the practice of observing phenomena and relating them in a way that correctly represents the phenomena's reality. Agricultural judgments about health, what to do where, and when to do what, best succeed when we begin to rely on a certain wisdom gained through observation and experience and when we perceive consciously and concretely the phenomena that induce life itself.

Biodynamic farming and gardening combines common-sense agriculture, an understanding of ecology, and the specific environment of a given place with a new spiritual scientific approach to the concepts, principles, and practices of agriculture."

Tips for Green Painting

Green painting tips from a journeyman painter

Because all synthetic materials gas off, many paints, although dry to touch within an hour or so, will continue to gas of on a molecular level, more or less indefinitely, and certainly for days, or weeks, on a level that is not preferable for those who have to live with it.

Alternatively, there are now "zero-emission" paints (no VOCs – or volatile organic compounds) on the market.  Where feasible (90% of cases), an environmentally conscious painter uses these alternative pr
ducts for interior applications.

This development is especially beneficial for anyone in your household/workplace who may suffer from environmental effects (perhaps all of us, on some level).

Nature Based Gardening

เขียนโดย admin | 19:31

Another Insight21 resource for gardening wisdom.

Ruth Stout, who passed on in 2006 at a grand old age, left behind a rich legacy for gardeners.  Ruth's study highlighted aspects found in the world of nature, like the presence of a layer of mulch, as well as leaving the ground unbroken (in effect, letting the inhabitants of the soil do the "turning"  - earthworms, microbes, and such).  Through her observation of various natural settings, followed by strategic implementation of these features, gardening was shown to become more
roductive, while reducing the work load.

Application of organic plant waste material directly onto the soil to a depth of an inch or more generates the following results:

- The bottom layer of mulch will gradually rot into the soil, providing a constant supply of nutrients, while eliminating the need for maintaining a compost pile.

- Moisture retention due to the mulch layer means reduced need for watering  - saving on both resources and labor.

- Mulch effectively prevents weeds from growing, thus reducing another laborious chore.

- Because of greater nutrient levels, plants can be positioned twice as densely as normally recommended.

- Even so, those plants will actually produce more than non-mulched plants.  In real terms the combination of denser spacing and higher production means a fourfold increase overall.

In addition, leaving the soil unbroken saves the laborious task of turning the soil, while the soil's compactness allows the "wicking" action of moisture and nutrients to flow.

I have had the pleasure of proving these results in my own garden, as have countless other practitioners of mulch gardening.

Gardeners and farmers are advised to study the finer points of the system before implementation.

See the links below , which expand on this system of applying nature-wisdom for increased productivity while saving on resources and labor.

How to Tank a Wet Room

เขียนโดย admin | 19:08

There is nothing worse than having a great luxury wet room that ends up leaking and causing dampness.  The following guide is how the professionals tank a wet room.  And tank to you and me is waterproof.

Walls

Start by applying a primer called keraprimer on a clean dry surface i.e. plaster board.  Dilute primer 1:1 with water and let it dry for at least 1 hour before waterproofing with a latex/fibreglass material called kerafibre.

Stir the kerafibre well before use
and use reinforced material in corners, junctions and over screw heads, brush kerafiber over the tape and make sure it is thoroughly wet.  On pipe inlets use reinforcement tape (cut out hole) press the patch in fresh kerafiber and brush kerafiber over to ensure it is wet.  Apply the first coat of kerafiber on the entire wall area then let it dry for at least 4 hours before applying the second coat.  Kerafiber changes to a darker colour when dry.

Apply the second coat of kerafiber and let it dry for 6-12 hours before tiling.  Check the thickness of the coat and apply extra kerafiber on thin or porous spots then allow to dry again.  The amount of kerafiber required min. 0.6 1/m2 and min.coat thickness o.4 mm.

Start tilling from the second lowest row of tiles, and at least 10cm from the floor.  Fix the tiles on the wall with superfix tile adhesive.

Floors

Apply keraprimer on a clean dry surface; dilute the primer 1:1 with water.  Use reinforcement tape at corners, junctions and over screw heads brush kerafiber over the tape and make sure it is thoroughly wet.

Use reinforcement material crosslaid to seal the floor drain.  Brush one sheet on the floor with kerafiber then brush the other one crosswise onto the first one brush well with kerafiber as well.

Apply kerafiber around the floor drain (40x40cm) and turn the double reinforcing sheet onto the drain.  Apply a coat of kerafiber on the entire area and let dry for at least 2 hours, (kerafiber changes colour as it dries).

Apply a second coat of kerafiber and let dry for 6-12 hours before tiling. Check the thickness of the coat and apply extra kerafiber on thin or porous spots. Allow to dry.  The amount of kerafiber is 0.8 1/m2 and min and the coat thickness should be 0.5mm.

Once it is dry cut out hole for floor drain.  Make sure the diameter of hole is at least 40mm shorter than the diameter of the drain. This ensures the brim of the hole reaches the seal of the floor drain.  The kerafiber coat must be at least 1.5mm thick around the drain.

Press a compatible tension ring carefully to the floor drain and cut off any extra membrane from under the tension ring.  Brush kerafiber over the entire floor area , up to the tension ring seal tension ring/drain junction with silicone.

Fix the tiles on the floor with superfix tile adhesive. Fill the joints with tile adhesive wait 15-30 minutes and wash excess grout off tiles with a sponge.  Wring the sponge well as excess water can discolour the joints.

Clean off excess grout and use silicone on all seams and corners.  Leave for 24 hours to dry completely.  Floor heating can be used gradually after a week from the joint sealing.

When we think of backyard activities, sports often come to mind.  While sports are a great way to spend your time outdoors, they are not all that backyard activities include.  In fact, while you may not necessarily think so, backyard activities also involve the completion of projects. If you are a home improvement lover, it is quite possible that your next backyard activity could involve the building or the remodeling of a structure.

When we think of backyard activities, sports ofte
come to mind.

In the United States, backyards are filled with millions of different things.  Many homeowners have pools, barns, work sheds, or garages.  If you already have these items inside your yard, you may want to think about remodeling them. Remodeling projects are ideal for those who wish to update or expand their backyard structures.  Summer is the perfect time to complete many remodeling projects, especially those that are outside.

While many homeowners make the decision to remodel, there are others that choose to build.  If you don't have a barn, garage, or work shed, but you would like to have one, now would be the perfect time to start construction. In most areas of the United States, summer has the prefect weather conditions for many backyard projects.

The first step in building or remodeling a backyard structure is to develop a plan. If you already know what you would like to build and how you would like to build it, you are well on your way to a completed project.  However, if you are unsure what you would like to build or how to build it, you may want to think about doing a little bit of research before you start your next home improvement project.

Perhaps, the easiest way to get ideas or directions on how to build a garage, work shed, or barn is to visit your local library or book store.  In these locations, you should be able to find a number of books that will not only offer you suggestions, but give you directions on how to get started.  Libraries are nice; however, you will only be able to keep the materials for a short period of time.  If you are interested in saving your resource guides for another project, you may want to consider purchasing your own books.

Once you have decided on a structural design, you will need to obtain the necessary building supplies. The supplies that you need will all depend on what you are building or remodeling. Despite the fact that different projects will require different supplies, there are some supplies that are common among all backyard building or remodeling projects. These supplies may include wood, metal, saws, and many other common household tools.

As previously mentioned, summer is ideal for most construction projects. Even though the weather will most likely be cooperative, it may still be a good idea to check your local weather forecast.  If you are doing a project that requires perfect weather, such as roofing or painting, you will want to plan your project around the projected weather forecast.  With projects that require more than one days worth of work, you may want to wait until the weather forecast predicts steady weather. This will prevent you from having to stop your building or remodeling and then startup again later.

Although building and remodeling projects are great backyard activities, not everyone is able to do them.  If you are inexperienced in construction, you may find it difficult or impossible to do the work yourself. If this is the case, professional assistance may be just what you need. Completing your own home improvement projects will save you money, but only if you know what you are doing.  Poor building or remodeling jobs may not only need additional, costly repairs, but they may also be unsafe.

With something as large and important as most home improvement projects, you are advised against taking any unnecessary chances or risks. Whether you make the decision to perform your own home improvement project or sit back and watch a professional do it, you will still be outside , enjoying everything that your backyard and the beautiful weather has to offer.

With property prices continuing to fall more and more people are facing negative equity which is where your house is worth less than the mortgage you have on it.  Rather than sitting and waiting for the market to improve there are ways out of this problem like improving your home to get the value back up.  The way to do this is to maximise the space without spending too heavily.

There are many different ways of improving your that will add value and converting the loft is one option.  If you convert your loft into an extra bedroom you instantly add value to your home and the cost can start from around £8000 but could easily be doubled.   You could be adding at least £20,000 to the value of your property so it is well worth the initial payout.

Another option is installing an ensuite bathroom for one or more of your bedrooms. The master bedroom is the best option and according to the Nation Association of Estate Agents this could add up to 5% value to your home.

With large kitchen and dining space in demand you could easily add value by extending your kitchen.  This can be quite costly though so make sure you get quite a few quotes before going ahead.

Garage conversions are an excellent way of adding space and value to a home and can cost as little at £5000.  If you never use your garage but tend to use it as a dumping ground why not make use of this space and turn it into a games room or an extra bedroom.  If you are lucky enough to have a double garage you could convert just half of it keeping the other half as a garage.

Another option would be to have your garden landscaped.  You could do this yourself if you're not afraid of getting your hands dirty.  There are plenty of gardening programmes and magazines that could give you some inspiration and advice.

Remember all of these home improvements will benefit you and your family while we all crawl out of the credit crunch.  What better way of adding value to your home than improving it.

Finding a reputable building company is foremost in most people's mind when thinking of having an extension or improvements to the home.  With so many cowboys around it's difficult to know if the company you choose is going to do you a cost effective professional job.  The best builders are those that are recommended to you but if you don't have any recommendations you will have to do a bit of ground work.  You could look though the yellow pages but this just gives you phone numbers which could be anybody.  The best bet is to look online and search for local companies.  Legitimate building companies will have nothing to hide, they will show their address and phone numbers and have pictures of recently completed work.  Testimonials are always good to look for and if you think they have been made up , ask the company for a recent customers contact details so you can phone and speak to someone who recently used the company.

This article will show you how you can wrap your home with additional love and warmth with just ONE gift. What is the gift?

Valentines is around the corner and even if you are not in a relationship it is a perfect time to remember much we love - our friends, family, and ourselves.  And what better way to express our love then with a gift that lasts several days, even weeks, and years (in the fond memories of the occasion).

This article will show you how you can wrap your home with additional love and warmth
with just ONE gift. What is the gift?

A bouquet of flowers with a "twist". The "twist" is that instead of giving/having flowers that just sit in one area, aromatize your home with one of nature's beauty to brighten your home and your heart every time you see it - throughout your home!

So, are you ready to find out HOW to stretch a dozen roses to illuminate your home?

Now remember, you don't have to stick to just roses for Valentines, any bouquet of your favorite flowers will do.

Here's how, start by:

1. Separating the bouquet; separate each flower, as well as, the decorative add-ons (leaves, etc.)

2. Get a variety of vases (you will need 6 for the below "decoration valentine recipe"). 6 vases for 6 rooms!

3. Trim the stems of the flowers to fit the proportion of your vase and remove any additional leaves ON the stems that seem to "stuffy" for the vase.

Don't have enough vases in your home? Don't worry! It only means that it is time to be unique and thrifty-chic by going to the following places in your home for additional vases: your pantry and refrigerator!

Grab clear jars (e.g. from jams, spaghetti, pesto sauce, vinegar, olive jars, etc.) that have different shapes and different sizes. Remove the labels - soak in water for at least 20 minutes to facilitate removing the labels (and yes, remove the contents inside!!). Also, a good "vase" resource could be TALL narrow drinking glasses.

Here's the recipe per room to glamourize your home for valentines:

3 flowers         Foyer:           Place a few bunched up on your console table in a jar (um, I mean "vase"). Maybe seeing flowers next to bills can soften the thought of "bills".

0 flower           Kitchen:        Instead of flowers, showcase the add-ons that came with the flowers. Display them on the counter to keep you company when you are slicing and dicing away your dinner preps.

1 flower           Dining:          Instead of tall flowers that may obstruct the vision when talking across the table, take a few pedals from 1 flower and have them float in water in a clear bowl.

5 flowers         Living Room:   Since this room is one of the biggest and most used rooms in homes, I suggest using the most flowers in this room .. so go crazy and use FIVE flowers in a bunch!

2 flowers         Bedroom:        Place 1 single flower next to each night stand, and add an extra loving touch to your room décor - wrap a note on the stem with your valentines message or soulful declaration:

  • I love you
  • I am beautiful
  • I am strong
  • You brighten up my world
  • You are "marvelous"
  • Life is beautiful

Wrap the message with a ribbon or thread or even ties from grocery bags (you know the ones that ties the loaf of bread, potato sack, etc.).

1 flower           Bathroom:      Place a single flower near your faucet or counter -basically the area that is most viewable to you in the morning. If you have a roomy window sill in your bathroom shove your toiletries to the side and add the flower onto the sill. If doing this, I recommend a "plastic" clear jar as a vase instead of glass since you may not be used to having glassware in the bathroom.

TOTAL = 12 flowers that WRAP your home!

So go ahead and whether you are getting flowers from a love one or treating yourSELF to a bouquet of flowers this valentines - wrap your home this valentines with flowers EVERYwhere!!!

Yes, EVEN in the bathroom - ESPECIALLY in the bathroom - it will be a ray of delicate sunshine into your bathroom (like a subtle morning cup of tea). This is especially important with large household where the bathroom is the private quite time to brush your teeth and take a shower that invigorates you for the beautiful day ahead!

Forward this article to all those who you think would want to know how to easily stretch a bouquet of flowers to fill their homes with nature's love. Have a happy valentines day! LIVE HAPPY!

Do you have problems with soil drainage? Does your back ache when you are tending the garden? Are you confined to a wheelchair yet still want to enjoy the benefits of gardening? Don't despair, a raised bed garden can be the answer to all these problems.

To escape from the non productive or poor growing garden, you have several choices, with one of them being how to incorporate the benefit of having one or two raised gardens beds in your backyard.

A raised bed has advantages over the ordinary bed because you are totally
in control of the soil that you use and you are able to garden in a more comfortable position. The different soil conditions required for individual plants can be controlled much more effectively and can be varied from bed to bed; a pH soil test kit is a very useful tool to enable you to achieve the correct conditions for individual plants.

Most plants thrive in loose, well draining soils and this is achieved in a raised bed because you don't walk on the soil so it does not get compacted. Raised garden beds drain excess water much better than normal garden beds, great news for areas with heavy soils and excess rainfall. This will help your plants intake of air round the root system, a major plus for abundant, healthy plants.

You can tend your raised garden bed in a more comfortable position which will help guard against backaches which can sometimes deter you in your endeavors to supply the family with fresh quality produce. It is also more convenient for those with disabilities or who have to garden from a seated position. We consider raised gardens to be a great asset to any gardener.

There is a wide choice of materials and sizes to choose from when deciding on raised garden beds for your own use. The availability of space will determine the size of the beds and how many you have. You can buy kits, or you can quite easily build your own out of anything that will hold dirt such as lumber, plastic, bricks or rocks. Lumber is the most commonly used and probably the easiest to work with.

There are a few things to think about when planning the raised bed. Decide on a comfortable height for you and make sure you can tend your plants from any angle without the need to walk on the raised gardens, thus preventing the soil becoming compacted. The raised bed should be situated in a position where it receives adequate sunshine for the plants that you want to grow in it leaving adequate room for wheelbarrows and other tools. Raised gardens should be a minimum of 6 inches in height to help correct any drainage problems; also it would be wise to enclose the area to eliminate runoff and erosion of the soil.

Usually, when building raised gardens you have to buy soil in, just take the overall dimensions to your garden centre and they will work out what you need. If you know upfront what plants your raised gardens are going to be used for, they can advise and supply the appropriate soil mix. If you're only raising the beds up to about 15 inches we advise you to fill them up with one half organic matter (from your composter) and one half soil. You can greatly reduce your costs by making your own compost. Now if your going to be looking at raised gardens that are waist high, say three foot , it makes sense that you take a different course of action to get good results and to try and lower costs. In order to reduce the amount of soil needed to fill this large space you can half fill it with rocks or sand then top it off with a 50-50 mix of manure or compost and soil. Adjust the pH levels for the plants you wish to grow and this will give your raised garden the ultimate growing conditions.

Raised garden beds are a great deterrent for various pests such as slugs and snails and also keep pathway weeds at bay.

Pruning, however necessary it may be, always exacts a price from the trees and shrubs in terms of their long-term health. Here are some tips for minimizing the damage.

No matter how necessary pruning is for attaining the desired shape or growth habit of garden trees and shrubs, it is not, as is often assumed, "good" for the plant. In fact, pruning is about as good for the health of plants as surgery is for the health of people. Like surgery, it may be necessary, but there is invariably a price to be paid. There are two ways in
which pruning can adversely affect the health of your landscape trees and shrubs.

Firstly, pruning cuts, which are effectively open wounds, are a source of both bacterial and fungal infection. The consequences of infection can take years to become apparent, but eventually, rot is liable to develop in the heart of a tree trunk or major branch. A tree where rot is well advanced is both numbered in years and dangerous.

The second area is more general but no less important for the long-term health of the plant. Pruning is liable to reduce the energy level of the garden trees and shrubs. This may seem counter-intuitive, especially when we see plants growing with renewed vigor following a good pruning. However, the consensus today amongst arboriculturists is that a positive energy level is the single most critical factor behind a plant's health, vitality, and resistance to pests and disease, and that pruning is detrimental to the plants' energy level.

This might not be too critical for shrubs, as the lifespan of most landscape bushes, as vibrant and beautiful garden elements, is usually not more than 20-30 years. In other words, by regular pruning, we effectively decide that a compact growth habit or more and better flowers are more important than longevity.

When it comes to trees however, it is a different story entirely, because the greatest value of a tree is in its age. Nothing in gardening compares to or can replace a mature tree. It is a magnificent living sculpture that to a great extent, affects how we feel. It follows then, that care has to be taken to avoid or at least reduce those actions that are liable to affect the long-term health of the tree, and those actions are primarily connected to pruning.

Correct Pruning Cuts – Some Guidelines

*The wound should be as small as possible in relation to the diameter of the trunk or branch to which the removed limb was attached. If the wound is going to be too large, then it is better to leave a stump about 50cm (1.5ft) in length, and periodically cut away new tissue that grows from the pruned branch. In time, the diameter of the limb should be smaller in relation to the girth of the trunk.

*Never make the final cut flush with trunk or branch, as bacteria and fungi are liable to penetrate the tree's defenses. Studies prove that this occurs even when the wound has calloused over completely. Rot of course, eventually develops from the infection. Instead of flush cuts, prune at the outer border of the joint between the branch and the trunk. The rot that may develop should be contained within this area without penetrating the trunk's bark.

*In order to prevent infection and reduce energy loss, never remove too much matter at one time. A third of the total volume of the tree is the absolute limit. It is far safer however to stop well before this quantity , and continue the pruning the following year.

If you want endless pink or blue flowering perennial shrubs all summer long in your landscape, be sure to plant the Endless Summer hydrangea. This is one plant you will not want to be without.  Find out the secret to their popularity!

The Endless Summer hydrangea, H. macrophlla, has endless possibilities for your garden. That's why it has become one of the most famous perennial shrubs to come along in a very long time.

This collection, which now includes a white mophead c
lled  'Blushing Bride', started with a single plant - Endless Summer The Original.  This plant has been proven over the past few years to be an exceptional addition to any garden.    They can be used as specimen plants in a perennial bed, or they can be great addition to a shady spot under a tree.  They can be pink or blue depending on what type of soil you have them planted in. In order to get them to bloom blue the soil must be aluminum-based with a pH  5.0. For a pink color, the soil must be non-aluminum, neutral, or alkaline.

This plant has been intensely researched at the University of Georgia. Their greenhouse, nursery, and field data all showed that it did indeed flower on new growth, has foliage flat medium green; moderate mildew susceptibility; estimating 3 to 5 feet height and as wide; have suffered cold damage in the trials but the new shoots develop flower buds and fully expressed inflorescences (blooms).

It will bloom May and June with a second full flush in October and November. Studies have shown that when flowers are removed, it takes 10 - 12 weeks before new shoots develop full sized inflorescences. For continuous color, the gardener might remove one half the inflorescences (blooms), allowing the remainder to dry on the plant while the new shoots are producing flower buds for the later in the fall.  The reason Endless Summer can bloom for so long is that the colorful heads aren't really flowers at all. Rather, they are actually sepals that are sterile and grouped in clusters of 3 to 5. The fertile florets are in the center of the cluster and are very small.

If you have these gorgeous plants in your yard, you will probably be tempted to bring some of the blooms inside for you and your family's enjoyment. Hydrangeas make wonderful bouquets and the Endless Summer hydrangea is no exception. Many people make blue hydrangea wedding bouquets for their special day.  The trick is to water the plants thoroughly the day before cutting them and plunge them immediately into a  clean bucket of tepid water with a little bleach in it to kill bacteria. Remove lower leaves that will be under water. If wilting occurs, place stems in boiling water for a few seconds. If you prefer, the mopheads can even be dried quite easily if you wait until later in their blooming season, when they are practically drying on the bush.

Endless Summer hydrangeas bloom on both old and new growth.  That's a good thing because so often if we get a late season frost, many varieties of hydrangeas that only grow on new growth, will not bloom that year.  That's why we love the Endless Summer hydrangea so much.

With these beauties, you will get all summer pink or blue flowers depending on the variety you chose. Be sure and check with your local garden center or online catalogs to purchase yours today for a perennial that blooms all summer long. With these beauties , you will get all summer pink or blue flowers depending on the variety you chose.

So either you have bought a new ducted air conditioner or you are about to buy one. Do you know how to run your air conditioner to it's full potential? Do you understand the maintenance required to keep your air conditioner running smoothly for many years. The following article discusses some hints and tips on how to get the best out of your ducted reverse cycle air conditioner.

The main maintenance you need to perform for a reverse cycle (refrigerative) ducted air conditioning system is
o clean the filter located in the return air grille. The return air grille is the big grille that sucks the air back into your system and can usually be found in a hallway or wall.
To clean the filter you must first open the return air grille. Once you have opened this grille, you can either pull the filter out or clean it whilst still in the grille. You can clean it by either a quick vacuum or by washing with warm soapy water. You should clean the filter about once every 3 months. If the system starts to work less efficiently or the return air grille becomes noisy it is also a good sign that the filter needs a clean.
Cleaning the filter regularly will ultimately increase the performance and longevity of your air conditioning unit. How you run your air conditioning system is also important. Try setting the temperature setting to an average level.
If you put the settings on maximum, it will not make the air conditioner cool/heat any quicker, it will just prevent the unit from cycling off which will cost you more money. When running your air conditioner you should also try to run as little zones as possible. If you run to many zones, it will be costly to run your air conditioner.
Also running fewer zones places less stress on the air conditioning unit which will ultimately increase it's lifespan. Finally , keep the outdoor unit clean and free from obstructions.
Try to keep the area clean and free from any household items to aid in airflow. Wash down the outdoor unit every few months to slow down rust build up. If you adhere to these hints and tips you are sure to get many years of peace and comfort from your reverse cycle air conditioning system.

Growing garlic is becoming more popular every day among gardeners and cooks. There is a good reason for that. It not only taste great, but it's good for you, too. Easy to grow, each planted clove will produce a full head of Garlic with between 8 to 20 cloves per head.

While we all know that garlic has many health benefits such as being a natural antibiotic, you may not know that they can also be healthy for your garden as well.  As a companion plant, when they ar
planted near roses and raspberries, garlic will improve the growth and health of your plants. It has the added benefit of deterring Japanese beetles and aphids.  Garlic is easy to grow and each planted clove will produce a full head of Garlic with between 8 to 20 cloves per head. To get started in with planting your garlic, first purchase your garlic of choice. Since the garlic from grocery stores has antisprouting chemicals added to it, be sure and buy your garlic from a reputable source rather than a grocery store.  One variety that you may enjoy that is popular here in the Mid-South is the mild flavored  'Elephant' garlic which has large clusters.

Planting Garlic

One half pound of garlic seed is a good start and will produce about 15 plants. Garlic is divided into hardnecks (Allium sativum var. ohioscorodon) and softnecks (Allium sativum var. sativum). First, check online catalogs or your local co-op for the variety that will suit your needs best.

Next, decide where you will plant your garlic. A raised bed is suggested if you do not have good soil or if you live in a wet climate. Good soil means loamy soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0.  Composted manure for essential nutrients incorporated into soil a few weeks before planting is helpful. If you are planting your garlic directly into your soil, plant in wide-rows 10 to 12 inches wide. Timing is important when planting garlic.  Bigger bulbs will be produced if you plant in the fall and let it grow and mature until the following summer. If you find that it's springtime already and you haven't planted yours yet, go ahead and plant if you like, just realize you will get smaller bulbs. Since garlic bulbs like cool weather, the earlier you can plant it the better it will grow and the bigger the bulbs will be.

Garlic is not susceptible to disease, but as with any plant, having good air circulation is the key to a healthy plant. If your garlic develops thrips, apply insecticidal soap. In cold climates, add more mulch a month after planting to prevent extreme temperature fluctuations. When growth appears in late winter, pull back the mulch and begin monthly applications of an organic fertilizer such as blood meal or fish emulsion. Stop fertilizing in mid to late spring (depending on what type of garlic you have). Mulch again as summer approaches.

Harvesting Garlic

It takes about 100 days for bulbs planted in the spring to mature. Harvest between late may in warm climates and mid-August in cooler areas.  Stop watering two weeks before harvest.  One tip  that garlic is ready to harvest is when the leaves on the lower half of the plant turn brown. To harvest, dig the bulbs up rather than pulling them up,  Being careful not to damage the outer skins.

Let them cure in  a dry, shady, well ventilated location for three days.  Don't wash them yet.  If you want to braid your garlic for a decorative touch, now is the time to braid the foliage of softnecks. Cure bulbs for 2 to 3 more weeks until foliage is completely dry. Once foliage is dry, clean the bulbs by wiping or peeling away the outer husk. Trim tops to 1 inch and roots to 1/2 inch.

Storing Garlic Bulbs

To store your garlic bulbs, place them in mesh bags or braided strings in a dark, cool place. Garlic will keep up to three months if stored at between 32 degrees Fahrenheit and room temperature.   Humidity level of 65 to 70 percent is best.
Don not refrigerate.

Troubleshooting

Common causes of small or no bulbing include high temperatures, excessive watering, wrong variety for your climate, and weed competition. Your local extension service can advise you as to what varieties grow well in your area.

Both you and your garden can benefit from growing garlic. Checking online catalog sources, your local extension service , or with your local garden center will give you many varieties that are fun to try and that will grow well in your area.

Raised bed gardening has enormous benefits to your plants and to you, the gardener.  But there are also some disadvantages to be considered as well.  In this article, we'll evaluate the various pros and cons of raised bed gardening so you can make an informed decision about what type of garden is best for you.

There are as many ways to structure a garden as there are different types of gardens themselves.  One form of gardening that is becoming more popular is raised bed garde
ing.  Raised bed gardening consists of planting in elevated beds of soil, whether in large planter boxes, or even bigger areas you construct yourself.  Raised bed gardening has many advantages, and a few disadvantages as well.  A review of the pros and cons can be helpful in deciding if this type of gardening is for you.

Pros:
  • If you have poor soil, raised bed gardens allow you to prepare your own rich mix of soil above ground for growing your plants.
  • Your gardening areas will be easier to access because you won't have to bend over as much, thus reducing fatigue and injury to the knees and back.
  • Raised beds are also ideal for elderly or disabled gardeners who are unable to reach down to the ground, and they can be constructed at almost any height to meet the gardener's needs
  • Plants are easy to keep organized.  For example, you can plant tomatoes in one elevated section and peppers in another.
  • Dead leaves and other garden debris will be confined to their own area, helping you maintain a tidier look in your yard.
  • You can prepare special beds of soil tailored to various plants.  For example, plants that need a highly acidic soil can be grouped in one area, and you can prepare the soil to the right pH specifically for their needs.
  • In heavy rains, there is less chance of soil erosion.
  • Rabbits, moles, and other garden pests are less likely to be able to access your plants.
  • Raised bed gardens are ideal for longer rooted crops such as carrots that need several inches to a foot of good quality soil.
  • Raised bed gardening is a great option if you have very little space.  Elevated planting areas can even be constructed on a small deck or patio area for growing a collection of herbs, vegetables, or flowers.
  • Cons:
  • Any tilling will probably have to be done by hand.  It's difficult to use tractors or rotary tillers in elevated planting areas.
  • The initial up front cost of constructing raised bed gardens is more expensive than simply tilling a traditional garden into your soil.  However, kits can be purchased online that make the construction process faster and easier.
  • The edges or borders of the planting areas must be well reinforced during the initial construction, or they may begin to break down over time, creating and ongoing maintenance issue.
  • If you live in a very dry climate, raised beds will dry out faster and require more frequent watering.  On the other hand, if you live in a very moist climate, your plants will be less susceptible to root rot from over watering.
  • Elevated planting areas are not suitable to vining or sprawling plants such as pumpkins, squash, watermelons, or various climbing plants such as morning glory, clematis, or trumpet vine.
  • The materials used for constructing raised bed gardens should be carefully considered.  Treated lumber or railroad ties soaked in creosote should not be used.  These chemicals will leak out into the soil over time, poisoning and killing your plants.
  • Putting in raised beds can be a big investment in time and money, but it will also pay you back in better plants, more gardening room, and easier access to your gardening areas.  A careful evaluation of all the pros and cons will help you make the right decision for you and your yard.  Whatever your decision , careful planning is always the key to successful results in the garden.

Need a fast growing tree with great  fall color? Planting an Autumn Blaze Maple is your best choice. It's tried and true and was even voted as the 2004 Urban Tree of the Year and Tree of the Year in 1997 by Iowa's Nursery and Landscape Association.

Need a fast growing tree with great  fall color? Planting an Autumn Blaze Maple is your best choice. It's tried and true and was even voted as the 2004 Urban Tree of the Year and Tree of the Year in 1997 by Iowa's Nursery and La
dscape Association.  It is best known for its gorgeous fall color,  fast growth rates, leafhopper tolerance, and its ability to adapt to a wide range of climate and soil conditions from zone 3 to zone 6. This tree is so versatile it can grow in most areas of the United States and Canada. You definitely want it in your landscape.

Autumn Blaze Maple is in the Family Aceraceae.  It is one of many Ace rubrum * A saccharainum hybrids developed by Poplar Farms. Considered a hybrid maple developed by crossing  the silver maple (Acer saccharinum) with the red maple (Acer rubrum).  Both of these parent trees had unreliable characteristics as a shade tree, but the breeders took the best qualities of both parents to make an outstanding fast growing tree which has a well-balanced branching habit, has beautiful fall color, is disease resistant to leafhopper damage, and grows well in tough areas such as clay, wet, or even dry problem areas.

Another great quality of this tree is its superior growth habit. Used as a specimen tree, or in clusters or stands, this maple  will grow 50 to 60 feet tall and be about 30 to 40 feet wide.  It has an oval growth habit with ascending branches and is nearly seedless.   The leaves look like a silver maple with a rich, medium green with pretty scarlet, orange and red fall color.  It also has excellent winter color because the rapid growth produces longer branching in one season than most maples. This adds interest and color to the winter landscape and the new growth limbs are wonderful in winter flower arrangements.

    Maintenance

Water your Autumn Blaze deeply and infrequently during prolonged dry periods. Having a good layer of mulch will help to retain the moisture in between waterings. When you mulch, be sure to keep the mulch 2inches from the trunk of the tree to prevent insect damage.

Fertilize established trees in late winter. Spread fertilizer evenly under the canopy of the tree.

Pruning in  fall and spring is recommended because of its rapid growth.  Take out dead growth and weak branches. Also remove interior spindly growth to allow more sunlight to penetrate the tree to insure a healthy tree. Winter pruning keeps the tree healthy and able to resist springs diseases and insects.  If you shape the tree when it's young by having strong outward branches and removing extra smaller side shoots and suckers from the base of the tree, you will be rewarded with a nice specimen tree.

Autumn Blaze Maple is ranked one of the best performers for growth and fall color display for the Southeastern U.S.  This Acer freemanii hybrid should be planted more in the urban setting since it combines the best characteristics of its parents , Red and Silver Maples.

Do you enjoy gardening and want to know how you can expand your hobby or take your skills to the next level?  Have you considered investing in a greenhouse, but aren't sure where to start?  This article has all the answers and more.  Find out everything you need to know about gardening in your own greenhouse.

Gardening is a popular hobby for young and old alike and can provide an education at home for children to better understand where our food comes from.  For the beginning
ardener who enjoys gardening and wants to take their skills and interest to the "next level," perhaps it is time to consider investing in a greenhouse.

Greenhouses are permanent or temporary structures, usually constructed of transparent or translucent material such as clear glass or plastic, that allow the sun's rays to enter and warm the air inside.  Delicate plants that would die if planted outside will often thrive in a greenhouse.  Furthermore, the standard growing season in your area can be extended by as much as 3-4 months into the early spring and late fall with a greenhouse.  A greenhouse can be a haven for the hobby gardener; it is a place to fill the hours of late winter in harsh climates, planting and transplanting, and tending to flowers and vegetables.

Before investing in a greenhouse, it's important to assess your goals.  What do you want to achieve with your greenhouse?  Some common greenhouse gardening objectives might include:
  • Starting vegetable plants early to get maximum yields from your garden.
  • Starting and cultivating beautiful flowers to extend their growing and flowering life.
  • Extending fall by move some plants such as tomatoes or peppers into the greenhouse for final ripening.
  • Growing and harvesting vegetables for your own use during winter months.
  • Growing plants from seed, and thus lowering the overall cost of gardening (because seeds are much more economical to purchase than small plants).
  • Growing plants for sale at a farmer's market or other business.
  • To experiment with new varieties and hybrids of plants, or even to hybridize your own new varieties.

  • Once you've determined what your greenhouse gardening goals are, then next step is to decide on a type of greenhouse.  It is possible to build your own greenhouse from scratch, though it may take you a lot of time and frustration.  It may be easier to purchase a greenhouse kit, which are readily available for purchase online and through catalogs.  A kit will make the process much easier, and in some cases, less expensive.

Another thing to consider is how much space you have for your greenhouse.  For individuals with very large backyards, acreages, or even farms, space is not an issue.  However, for many suburban gardeners, their backyard space is at a premium.  If this is the case, you may want to consider a portable greenhouse.  Portable greenhouses come in many shapes and sizes, and are usually designed to be set up temporarily on a patio or deck, and then they can be easily moved or taken down later.  For apartment or condominium dwellers who don't even have a deck or patio, don't despair.  Indoor tabletop green houses are good option because they can fit on a shelf, workbench, or end table.  These units usually have several shelves, and can be outfitted with a grow light or heat lamp for maximum efficiency.

While greenhouse gardening may seem intimidating, it's really no different than outdoor gardening.  The hardest part in getting started is choosing your greenhouse and getting it set up.  Once you've accomplished this, the fun of greenhouse gardening begins!  The greenhouse gardener can look forward to bigger plants, more flowers, larger harvests, and most importantly , a longer growing season to extend their favorite hobby throughout the year.

Like many gardeners, you might wonder what all the buzz is about greenhouse gardening.  What are the benefits of owning a greenhouse?  Bigger and better plants, year round gardening, and cost savings are just a few of the many benefits enjoyed by greenhouse gardeners.  In this article, we'll explain what's so great about greenhouse gardening.

For those of us who live in colder climates, experiencing five months or more of winter each year, the benefits of greenhouse gardening can be enorm
us.  Gardening with a greenhouse allows for an extended growing season that can begin and end months outside of the traditional outdoor growing season in your climate.  Greenhouses may even allow you to grow plants year round.  Greenhouses can also provide a warmer mini-climate for plants that typically would not grow in your zone, allowing you to cultivate many varieties of plants that are unique to your area.

When growing plants in a greenhouse, it's important to remember that the air temperature inside can be as much as 30 to 40 degrees warmer than the outside air temperature.  While the warmer air is wonderful for your plants during the cool months of late fall, winter, and early spring, in the hot summer months, these temperatures can pose a real threat to your plants.  When the temperature inside a greenhouse gets too high, your plants can actually burn.  In the hottest part of the summer, it's a good idea to add a shade cloth to your greenhouse to help keep the inside temperatures down.  When building your greenhouse, consider aligning the roofline in an east-west direction so that the largest area of the roof is exposed to the south.  This will accomplish two things.  First, if a shade cloth is required, you'll likely only need to cover the southern facing side of the roof, saving you time and money in materials.  Second, by having more roof area exposed to the intense southern sun, you'll get maximum solar gain in your greenhouse during cooler months, when you need it most.

For those of us who enjoy vegetable gardening, another benefit of gardening with a greenhouse is the ability to start vegetables from seed early in the year.  While many nurseries and garden centers to sell vegetables as young plants in the early part of the year, these small plants can be expensive to buy.  Certainly when planting on a larger scale, starting your plants from seed is a much more economical option.  Additionally, when planting some certain types of herbs and vegetables, starting plants from seed may be a requirement, as most nurseries don't grow the more obscure varieties and hybrids.

In the case of vegetables that grow well in containers, such as tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, strawberries, and many herbs, a greenhouse can be a way to grow your own produce year round and save money on your grocery bill.  One option is to begin your vegetables in the greenhouse early in the year, and then move then outdoors during the warm summer months.  When the weather cools off again in the fall, the plants can be brought back into the greenhouse to extend harvests for several more months, or as long as the lifespan of each individual plant will allow.

While a greenhouse can be a significant up front investment, the rewards of greenhouse gardening are almost endless.  Your greenhouse will pay you back with new and unique varieties of plants, bigger and better harvests , and a wealth of invaluable gardening experience.

If you're looking for a way to add interest and character to your garden or backyard, an arbor or pergola might be just the thing you need.  In this article, we'll discuss various types of arbors and pergolas and how they can be used to enhance your overall landscape design.

Arbors and pergolas are two types of garden structures that can greatly contribute to the overall design of your landscape.  Arbors and pergolas add an element of interest to a yard or garden by drawing the eye upward
Whether functional or ornamental, there are many ways you can utilize these structures to enhance your landscape design.

Like many gardeners, you may be asking yourself, what is the difference between an arbor and a pergola?  While there isn't a clear consensus on this, generally an arbor is a smaller structure with an arched top, usually standing 6 1/2 to 9 feet tall at the peak.  Arbors are often placed over walkways or a gate in a fence.  A pergola, on the other hand, has a flat top that is directly perpendicular to the straight sides it rests on.  Pergolas can range in size from small enough to just cover a walkway to large enough to span a deck or patio area.

Arbors and pergolas can be either functional or purely ornamental.  If using an arbor for a functional purpose, consider adding a bench or swing to create a cozy nook for sitting and enjoying your garden.  Large pergolas can be used as an overhead cover for a deck or patio.  While the top of the pergola will probably not keep out rainwater, it can be designed to cast much needed shade on your outdoor seating area.  Arbors and pergolas with lattice sides and tops can also provide a supporting structure for vines and climbing plants.  Consider planting a climber like clematis, honeysuckle, or trumpet vine at the base of your arbor or pergola to create a beautiful floral focal point in your landscape.

Materials for arbors and pergolas vary greatly and can include wood, vinyl, or metal.  To determine what is best for you, carefully consider the pros and cons of each material type in conjunction with your situation and needs.  Wood lends a natural and sometimes rustic look to an arbor or pergola, and can be painted or stained to easily change its appearance down the road.  Wood is usually the most cost effective option; however, it won't last as long as metal or vinyl.  Some concerns with wood structures include rotting, splintering, and decay caused by wood boring pests.

Vinyl, on the other hand, is a great maintenance free option that won't require painting or staining.  Vinyl is also resistant to rot and decay, and will last much longer than wood.  Vinyl typically costs more than wood, but the longevity of the product may pay off in the long run.  If you decide to go with a vinyl unit, be sure to look for a UV resistant plastic that won't fade or discolor when exposed to the sun.

Metal can also be a good material choice because it's very durable and long lasting.  Carefully consider the type of metal, though.  Iron and steel will rust, which may or may not be desirable, depending on the look you want.  Aluminum is a good rust free metal that is lightweight and still very strong.  If you want the look of painted metal, select a product with a powder coat paint finish for durability.

Arbors and pergolas can be designed and constructed on your own, or they can easily be purchased as completed units or ready to assemble DIY kits.  If you decide to purchase a kit, you may find that online specialty stores and mail order catalogs have a better selection than your local garden center or nursery.  If you decide that an arbor or pergola isn't the right element for your landscape design, you might want to consider other types of structures such as trellises, gazebos, or lath houses.

Whatever you decide , garden structures are a great way to add a focal point to your landscape.  They will enhance your garden's aesthetics and add a vertical element to spaces that are usually constructed on horizontal planes.  Arbors and pergolas in particular can take a simple garden design and turn it into a graceful and beautiful area to be admired and appreciated.

Do you have a shop or garage that needs organizing, but you also want a custom look? Well, you may be surprised at the variety of finishes and materials available in garage cabinets. Learn a bit about what is on the market to help you decide what is best for you!

I have been shopping around for some garage cabinets to help me organize my shop, and I was really impressed with the large variety of cabinets available and especially the variety of materials and finishes. I had just thou
ht metal or pressed board, but that does not do garage cabinets justice! Though plain metal cabinets that look like you high school locker are available, there are a lot of metal options with better finishes.

Of coarse, you can get just metal garage cabinets, usually made of cold rolled steel. But the neat thing is the variety of colors that are available, you don't have to go with institutional gray unless that what you really want. Many metal cabinets are two-tone, such as red doors on black cabinets, or silver on black, or sandstone on charcoal. If you spend a lot of time in your garage, this is a great way to customize it, especially if you ad the cool checkered garage flooring that is also available.

If you need garage cabinets that are going to get a lot of use (or abuse?) and need to stand up to some serious work, then heavy duty steel cabinets are a great option. Fully welded seams for durability, full length piano hinges and higher weight capacities make steel garage cabinets perfect for a busy shop. A powder coated finish is also great for a lot of use because it helps hide the dirt and doesn't show fingerprints that are left behind.

You can also get cabinets made of medium density fiberboard (MDF) with nice laminate finishes. If you go with UltiMATE garage cabinets, they boast a unique polyurethane coated cabinet front which offers added durability and a smooth automotive finish. Their cabinets also have a rounded profile on all doors and cabinets for a nice clean look. These are great for your home garage. Though, remember, that MDF does tend to be heavy.

If you really like the nice shiny look and don't have little kids (or you like to wipe down cabinets regularly) then stainless steel , good luck and have fun getting you garage organized!

All about various flooring options, including basement flooring, vinyl flooring, cork flooring, cheap flooring, wood flooring and more

Choosing from among the various flooring styles can be quite difficult to because there are so many styles on the market you can be spoiled for choice. You also have to take into account whereabouts the flooring will be used, because some styles are just not suited to some situations. This article will take a look at some of the various flooring styles and give some pointers as to how they can
e chosen to get the best deal.

One place in the house that is always a problem when it comes to choosing the flooring style is the basement, but luckily there are many different types of basement flooring options, and these can range from laminate basement flooring through rubber flooring, and even cork flooring. Laminate flooring can be good in a basement but you do need to make sure that the basement is not damp, and you may have to do some remedial work before you lay the flooring there. Rubber basement flooring can be a good sound insulator, and is also very waterproof which can make it a very good choice for the basement. Cork flooring is also a great sound insulator and also has the added benefit that it can be quite warm.

Many people, of course, really like to have something that has an antique style, and there are many styles of antique laminate flooring that can be found from various companies. There are many flooring styles in the antique type of flooring, and they can range from antique oak to antique pine flooring with many different styles in between. The thing to think about is how the flooring fits in with the overall decoration of the room.

One thing that many people like to bear in mind is how easy it is to install the particular flooring style, and in this respect flooring tiles can be a very good choice. It can be a good idea to get a professional flooring contractor to look at this so that you are certain that you get the job done properly.

It should be obvious that the many different styles of flooring mean that the choice needs to be taken in relation to the overall design of the room. The best way to look at what is available is to go online and look at the various flooring supplies that are available there , as this will give you a really good idea as to the best choice.

Adding an arbor or trellis to your garden is a big job.  The last thing you want to do is start a project like this without being prepared!  This article discusses important considerations to take into account before beginning the project of adding a garden trellis or arbor.

Adding a garden arbor or trellis to your yard can be a nice "upgrade" for your landscape or garden.  Arbors, pergolas, and trellises will add to the overall look of your yard and can even boost property va
ue.  However, there are several issues that should be taken into consideration before you begin the process of adding a new arbor or trellis.

One of the first and most important questions to ask yourself, is how does this project integrate into my current garden area?  Do you have a wood fence that you want to match the style or color of?  Or do you want your yard to have a more eclectic look?  Vinyl arbors and trellises for example are available in many colors, and often times provide a very clean, modern look.  Wrought iron or aluminum is another choice, and can provide a very classical and formal look-even something of a "castle-like" appearance if you choose black painted metal.

One good idea is to purchase a landscaping software program for your computer that will allow you to take a digital photo of your home, upload it to the computer, and then incorporate various landscaping ideas or elements to the photograph so you can envision how the end result might look.  Such software programs are readily available for purchase, and operating them requires just a bit of time with the tutorials and some general computer skills.  The results are well worth the time before you begin the actual on site project.

Now that you have thought through the end result, it's time to decide if this is going to be a "do it yourself" (DIY) project or if you'll seek outside help, such as a licensed contractor, to do the job for you.

If you choose to make it a DIY project, how much time will you need to allocate?  Can the project be completed in a weekend, or will it require a week or more of full or part time work on your part?  Do you need to schedule vacation from work in order to start and finish in a timely manner?  Nothing is more frustrating than having an unfinished project linger on much longer than you had anticipated.  If you have a friend or family member who would be willing to help you out, now might be a good time to call upon their resources.

If you do seek outside help, one of the most important things you can do is check references.  Most reputable landscaping companies will have photo albums of their completed projects.  Look through the photos to get an idea of the overall quality of workmanship.  If you see that the contractor has completed a similar project to what you're looking for, inquire of the name and phone number of their previous customer.  Then call those homeowners to inquire about their level of satisfaction with the job and the contractor.  Be sure to ask the following important questions:  Were you satisfied with the quality of work?  Was the work performed in a timely and satisfactory manner?  Did the end cost come in at or below the initial estimate, or did unexpected or hidden fees pop up during the project?  Lastly, inquire if you can drive by and have a look at the finished project.  Any homeowner who is happy with the end result will probably be very pleased to show it off to someone else.

No matter what your final decisions are , taking the above items into consideration will be well worth the time spent before you begin the project of adding a new arbor or trellis to your garden.  Good planning and execution is the key to a successful end result in any home project.

How to choose a boiler, including residential boilers, automatic boilers, residential boiler suppliers, cheap boilers, efficient boilers

The worst thing that can happen during the winter is for your gas boiler to fail, and it is due to this fact that it is very important that when you come to choose a residential gas boiler you take account of three very important factors which will ensure that you are unlikely to suffer from any major problems. The three factors that you need to taking to account of these are efficiency; cont
ol; and maintenance. Take these into account and you should be fine.

Firstly, efficiency. It is very important that your boiler is as efficient as possible, because it is this that will help to save you money on your fuel costs. When the boiler is inefficient it essentially means it is using more fuel than it needs to do to keep your house or apartment warm. The best way to look at efficiency is to make sure that you look at the manufacturers literature, and this will give the efficiency as a percentage. The higher the percentage the best of the efficiency, and the more likely you are to have a good boiler.

Second, control. One of the most important things about your boiler is that you can control the heat in a house, and the temperature of the water, because this will mean you do not need to have a house or apartment warmer than it needs to be, or spending money on heating water that no one will use. The best way to make sure that you can control the heating element in your boiler is to fit a digital control panel which will enable you to control the heat in 1° increments.

Thirdly, maintenance. It is very important that your boiler is built to a good standard and has a good reputation for longevity. The boiler maintenance can be very expensive , and it is therefore essential that your boiler does not need to be maintained constantly. A good rule of thumb is that your boiler should only need to be maintained once a year and with minimal costs.

As you can see following a few simple rules can save you a lot of trouble when it comes to buying a residential gas boiler. Follow these three simple steps and you should be well on your way to making sure you have a boiler that keeps you warm but yet does not cost the earth.

Small size tub choices, including small pedestal tubs, small square bathtubs, small bathtub colors and more

Many people live in a place that has a small bathroom, whether it be a small house or apartment, and it can often be a struggle to find a bathtub for such a small space. However, there are options, and this article will take a look at a few of those options in order that you can make the choice a little easier.

One of the most common types of bathtubs for small bathrooms is the corner bathtub, and the reason it i
so popular is that you can essentially get a full size bathtub but yet one which takes up much less room within the bathroom itself. The interior shape of the bathtub is often an oval, and sometimes these bathtubs will have a seat, which enables you to have a shower. In this way you can save a lot of space but yet still have a bathtub which gives you a great bathing experience.

Another way to save space within the bathroom is to have a sunken bathtub, and although these can be quite expensive they can save space due to the fact that they can be covered over when they are not in use and can therefore be used as a normal part of the bathroom space. They do need to be installed by a professional contractor though and this will add to the cost.

But one of the best types of small bathtub is a seated tub which, as the name describes, is a tub in which the bather sits down. This means that the bathtub can be very deep, and can almost be a vertical type of tub. This really can be a great space saver and is something that is worth consideration.

As can be seen there are several options for getting a bathtub in a small bathroom , and by looking around you can certainly find one to suit your needs.

When selecting an irrigation control timer, consider the Hunter XC Controller Timers. They are versatile, yet easy to use and are perfect for the residential landscape. Here are some of the best features and benefits.
Three Programs, Four Start Times per Controller />With three separate programs and four start times available per program, a homeowner has almost unlimited flexibility to take care of each watering zone in the lawn.
Day Off Feature for Local Regulation Compliance
Many cities now have mandatory days off from irrigation. The Hunter XC irrigation controllers allow the user to select one mandatory day off, which will give the user peace of mind that the irrigation will not accidentally go off on a water restriction day, saving the user from a citation.
    Several Power Backup Features
Anything plugged into an overall electrical system is bound to encounter problems with surges and power outages. A 3v lithium battery is included with the Hunter controllers to ensure that all programs are backed up in the event of a prolonged power outage. The controllers also have built-in surge protection to withstand electrical surges.
    Diagnostic Programs for easy Troubleshooting
The Hunter Quick Check is a program that allows users to quickly check for problems within the controller system. The owner's manual comes with a comprehensive list of common questions for troubleshooting and the, generally simple, solutions. Users can also run test programs from the controller.

These timers come in four, six or eight station capacity and can handle enough power to run up to three solenoid valves at one time.
    Contractor Features

This saves valuable time in re-programming the machine.
    Water Saving Features
Output for each program can be adjusted from 0% to 150%, and each program can be set on a 1-7 day rain delay. The multiple stations and multiple program features allow the irrigation settings to be tailored to each individual area of the lawn or garden, ensuring that each spot gets just enough water-not too much and not too little.
    Flexible Run Times
In addition to flexible start times, each program can run from one minute to four hours on automatic programming. The system can also operate manually with use of the programming dial to override the exisiting program. After the manual override, the programs will return to normal during the subsequent cycle.
For residential landscapes managed by homeowners or landscape contractors , the Hunter XC Controller Timers combine the features and benefits of much more complicated systems in an easy to use and maintain interface.
