On a cold day, there's nothing better than warming yourself next to a glowing fireplace.

While wood burning fireplaces are the traditional standard, gas fireplaces have increased in popularity in recent years. They have numerous benefits, including price and safety, but are not right for all homes. Here are a few reasons to purchase (or avoid) a gas burning fireplace.

Comparatively Inexpensive

When compared to wood burning fireplaces, gas fireplaces are incredibly inexpensiv
. Traditionally, fireplaces required a lot of space and a frame of non-flammable materials, such as stone or brick. The most popular type of gas fireplace, the direct-vent, does not require the installation of a new chimney. Instead, these are installed by a Heating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) professional. The only special considerations needed are the ability to run the vent and the availability of a gas line. Additionally, natural gas is typically less expensive than wood.

Ease of Use

Gas fireplaces are a dramatic improvement over wood burning fireplaces. Rather than needed to provide a steady stream of dry wood, gas models can be ignited via a switch or remote control. Unless there is no gas available, a well maintained gas fireplace will always light without needing to be stoked or primed. They don't require starter materials or starting logs.

Variability of Design

Direct-vent gas fireplaces can be placed against a wall like a traditional fireplace, directly into the wall or in the middle of a room. Anywhere a HVAC professional can run a vent and a gas line, a gas fireplace can be installed. Because of the availability of installation options, gas fireplaces are excellent for integration into an existing d้cor. If your redecorate, there are a wide variety of fireplace designs that can be implemented to update the installation. Many home improvement and decorating companies offer professionals that offer advice on how to remodel a fireplace, and can often refer you to a local contractor that specializes in the field.

Cleaner and More Efficient

Because they do not use wood, gas fireplaces do not need to be regularly cleaned. There are no ash or residual materials left in the fire box after use. While the vent should be checked annually to ensure there are no blockages, there is no need for a chimney sweep or other yearly cleanings to remove soot and debris.

Less Realistic

One of the largest draw backs of gas fireplaces is the flame. When compared to a real burning log, the flame produced by a gas fireplace is not as full and realistic. They also do not provide the same scent, which many people feel is a benefit of wood burning fireplaces.

More complicated

Gas fireplaces as much more complicated that their wood burning cousins. They require annual checks on the starter, thermostat and vent to ensure safe and proper functionality. These maintenance checks can be less expensive than visits from a chimney sweep , but the increased complexity of gas fireplaces also allows for more technical failures and potential repair bills.

As with everything in life a careful planning process will make for an easier life in the long run. The same goes for finding the right sized timber gates for your garden. This article should help you think about making the right choices for the size of your timber garden gate

When choosing the size of the timber gate for your garden you have a few variables to take into consideration. You have the obvious height and width choices which are primarily dictated by the size and width of the gap you have to plug with your g
rden gate but sizes can also be chosen based on aesthetic reasons.

As well as gap and aesthetic reasons you also have security issues to take into account which will be an influence on the third dimension of your timber gate, the depth. One other deciding factor on the size of your garden gate is cost, which unless you are extremely wealthy, will be a judgement based on a balancing act between necessity and funds available.

First of all we shall look at what many will see as the most important factor, the gap for which your timber gate is to fit into. Now from my experience this is actually one of the least important things to take into consideration when choosing the size of timber gate you wish to go for. The reason for me coming to this conclusion is that there are many things you can do to make room for a garden gate to fit into the area you wish to have it in. Some of these could be trimming back a hedge, knocking down part of a wall or even taking a few fence panels down to make room for your timber gates. By the same token you can also extend a fence or wall and plant new hedges or plants to fill a gap should a slimmer garden gate be your gate of preference.

Although making space for your timber gates may be simple enough , once you have created the required gate you then have to make sure that you measure the gap correctly. If you do not get this step right you could have a hand made wooden gate made and then have to mess about re-adjusting the gap to suit the garden gate. When measuring your gap make sure that you allow for gate posts if you are having them to go with your timber gate too.

Now for the aesthetic part which is what I would class as the most important aspect when choosing the size of your garden gate. If you only have a small garden then a 6ft by 6ft timber gate is just going to be too over powering for the layout of your garden. A nice delicate 3ft garden gate would be just the ticket for a petite garden whereas a large 5 bar timber gate would look lovely at the bottom of a garden with a long drive.

Tall garden gates are more suitable as passage way gates where they are up against the side of the house or some structure. Having such a timber gate in a normal garden with a smaller wall running around it just would not set the scene of a beautiful garden at all.

These taller timber gates do offer more security though and if you want a gate to keep intruders out then these may be the type for you. A thicker gate would also stop would be intruders gaining access to your premise if they were to try brute force as a means of trespass. Thicker garden gates are also ideal for pet gates which need to with stand the test of dogs and such like jumping on them all day long.

The final decision you have to weigh up is whether each of the above is worth the extra cost that they would take. Taking all of the above into consideration should give you all the answers you need to select the right sized timber gate for your particular need.

As you probably already know, there is a wide range of wooden furniture in the marketplace that you can choose from.

Hopefully, you will find this simple guide helpful. There are various aspects that you need to consider, and these aspects affect the pricing of the furniture. It is then up to you to strike a balance between what you want and the price. That will lead you to a wise buying decision.

Aspect 1: Outer appearance of the wood furniture.

This is the first aspect to co
sider because you need to decide in advance the designs that you would prefer to have. Take a look at your existing design and spend some time brain storming for ideas. Ask yourself what type of wood furniture would fit into the existing design. If you need more ideas, you can always refer to home decor magazines to see what is in, and what is out. You may come across some designs that you particularly like. Save up those images for future reference. Once you narrow down the look and feel of the furniture to just a handful of designs, it's now time to consider the raw materials.

Aspect 2: The type of wood.

This is the second aspect that you must consider. There are so many different types of wood to choose from. In general, they are classified into 2 broad categories - hardwood and softwood. The characteristics of hardwood is that the wood is more durable, and they are generally harder to work with. The only type of hardwood that is relatively easy to work with is teak. For this reason, teak furniture can be more costly than furniture made from other types of wood.

Softwood is easier to work with. You can expect cheaper pricing, but the furniture is much less durable. They tend to rot or become damaged just after a few short years. But the upside is that since they are so easy to work with, you get a wider range of designs.

Each has its own place in the marketplace. The only way to choose, is to be clear about your own preferences, goals, and lifestyle. For example, if you are staying in a rented apartment for about 6 months or so, it makes sense to buy cheaper furniture that is made from softwood.

Aspect 3: Wood finishing.

Most types of wood, when unprocessed, can be vulnerable when exposed to moisture. Mold may grow, and the wood will rot. To protect the furniture, protective layers should be applied to the surface of the wooden furniture (especially for outdoor furniture). Some types of wood like Teak have natural oils that protects the qualities of the wood. In this case, all the furniture needs is a light film of protection for it to last for years.

Aspect 4: Pricing.

This is the final aspect to ponder over. After considering all the above aspects, you should more or less know what exactly you are looking for. Never make a purchase based on price alone. You may end up making a bad buying decision (i.e. furniture that doesn't fit your needs, wants, and desires). If the type of furniture you are looking for is out of budget , try settling for less branded items. You may even wish to buy wood furniture at wholesale prices for better savings.

Whether added to enhance the "green" feeling of a home or preexisting in a more traditional house, a conservatory is a wonderful way to enjoy nature through most of the year.

It's also an excellent spot for entertaining, summer meals and enjoying warm summer evenings. Because of the many appealing reasons to use it often, it's important to select conservatory furniture that will complement and enhance the atmosphere.

Cane furniture, commonly referred to as wicker, is the perf
ct accent for a conservatory for many reasons. First and foremost, uncolored cane furniture offers a lustrous, natural hue that enhances the beauty of a natural surrounding. Natural wicker is a favorite for outdoor seating areas, or for interior rooms that want to bring an element of nature indoors.

While hardwoods such as teak or oak may seem to overpower a natural area, cane furniture made from bamboo or rattan will offer an extremely earthy look that will increase the beauty of the conservatory rather than competing with it. Not only will it look as if it simply belongs, the woven pattern provides a light, airy look that will not weigh down a conservatory's seating area.

The woven pattern of wicker will also allow it to blend in to its surroundings. Where solid counterparts may take up entire spaces and block out the view of everything behind it, wicker will allow glimpses of the scenes around it. Because of this, it allows the area to flow freely, without interruption, and enhances the serene quality of a conservatory.

Because cane furniture is a traditional style, and a conservatory is a traditional room, it's important to not overlook the impact the two items will have on each other. A conservatory would not be well served by modern, metallic furniture, and, while traditional, wrought iron would look too heavy, clunky and cold to properly stimulate the earthy qualities of a conservatory. Contemporary wicker, however, can offer just the right blend of traditional and modern while still allowing the natural surroundings to take center stage.

When purchasing cane furniture, it is extremely important to carefully select the material. Some modern wicker is made of high grade plastic. This should generally be avoided for a natural setting such as a conservatory, as the imitation of bamboo or rattan can never live up to the original. Even extremely close matches will always be obviously artificial.

Natural cane furniture, while more expensive than artificial, is the perfect choice for conservatories. Its durability, quality and natural beauty will enhance the organic beauty of the room for years to come. When paired with bright colored cushions, it can become an exotic , comfortable seating area to enjoy year round for any occasion from breakfast to a formal gathering.

Your perfect outdoor hideaway may be under a grove of trees, surrounded by rose bushes or in the shade of a favorite fountain. These tranquil locales each possess an individual attraction that is unique to them.

They provide you with a special area to relax, bring friends and enjoy family gatherings. Their importance shouldn't be understated, and the furniture you place there should blend in and provide a warm, inviting space.

Teak, a warm honey-colored tropical wood, provide
the perfect accent to outdoor gardens. Although it is a more expensive variety of hardwood, teak is incredibly durable and weather resistant. The amount of care it needs to maintain its lush, natural finish is a simple annual cleaning and treatment with a specialized teak protector. If left untreated, it will weather to a beautiful silver patina. When proper care is given, teak will not warp, rot or splinter. Unlike many other types of hardwoods, teak does not requiring sanding or refinishing.

The resilient nature of teak garden furniture makes it an obvious choice for longevity in an outdoor setting. Where less expensive woods would rot or warp after several years, teak's price is offset by its long lasting nature. It is an excellent investment for your favorite outdoor space.

Not only is teak weather resistant, it's also capable of withstanding frequent, heavy use. You may use your garden furniture infrequently or on a daily basis. No matter what your usage level, teak can gracefully withstand the demands you place on it without cracking or breaking. It is an excellent choice for outdoor gardens where furniture abuse is a potential problem, such as with young children or a highly variable climate.

Teak garden furniture will blend in to an open outdoor setting better than nearly any other type of wood furniture. If kept treated, the warm finish provides an inviting scene for the outdoor area. If left to its own devices, the silver patina will provide you with a traditional looking garden set that evokes an old fashioned scene.

Even though it is incredibly durable, teak should not be left exposed to the elements unnecessarily. The legs should be kept on dry ground or patio blocks, not directly in the dirt, as even the hardiest of woods will eventually rot when left in standing water. When it is not in use, it should be covered with a tarp or plastic sheet to prevent water accumulation on the furniture itself. Teak garden furniture should be stored indoors or in a covered garden shed during the months that are prone to wet or snowy weather.

Teak will blend in perfectly with nearly any outdoor garden. The initial investment in this durable outdoor furniture will provide a return over your lifetime , as it enhances and accents your favorite outdoor space.

Decorating an outdoor living area such as a patio or porch can be exciting and daunting all at once. What type of material should you choose? What and how many pieces should you purchase?

What size, color and texture will best suit your outdoor space? To answer these questions, you'll need to ask yourself a few more and determine what your needs really are.

How often will you use it?

This is the most important question to ask yourself when deciding what type of pat
o furniture to purchase. The frequency of use will help you decide if you need something lightweight and easily storable, such as plastic chairs, or durable and long lasting.

If you plan on using your patio several times a day during permitting months, you should look for well constructed, durable hard woods such as teak. These will not only stand up to a frequent use (and probably abuse) but will be easier to clean and maintain. Hardwood patio furniture, while more expensive, is more capable of withstanding the elements than its less expensive counterparts.

How forgiving is your climate?

Depending upon your area, you will need to consider many factors for your furniture. Usually sunny climates will require shade for the furniture and its owners, to prevent sun damage and premature weathering. Areas that are temperate year round can afford to leave the furniture outside, but should maintain some type of covering, whether it is a tarp or sheet, to protect the furniture during inclement weather.

For climates that do not allow year round use of the patio, owners should maintain an adequate storage space. This can be indoors, such as a garage or attic, or an outdoor storage shed. The important thing is to protect the furniture from premature weathering from extreme weather like snow or sleet.

Extremely wet climates should avoid anything made of metal, as it is likely to rust.

Do you already have a style?

You may have already planted an English rose garden or want to set up a patio under a Southern inspired tree grove. The color and style of your existing d้cor will play a contributing factor in the type of patio furniture you purchase. Ideally, the newly selected furniture will blend seamlessly into the existing style and provide an outdoor extension of your home. If you do not already have a style, you can be more experimental in your selections and develop a style as you go along.

The selected furniture should always match the mood you want your living area to provide. Teak offers a warm, inviting atmosphere, while wicker provides a traditional appearance. The typical uses and perceptions of each material , color and style should weigh heavily in the decision. Take your time to make an informed decision. You will be enjoying the furniture for years to come.

Orchid Plant Care Guide

เขียนโดย admin | 07:47

Some useful tips on how to grow orchids.

The orchid is a gorgeous, if somewhat frail flower. The orchid flower, with a little care, can make a showy addition to any home. Once you understand their needs, orchids can become hardy flower plants that add beauty to any room in your home.

When you are selecting an orchid flower, it may look like the choices are endless, and for good reason. All orchid flower plants belong to the family known as Orchidaceae, which is the bigge
t families in the world. There are about 25000 species of orchids available, all with their own great features.

There are, some, similarities among the orchid flower plants. Most orchids grow fast in a warmer climate. Unless you live in a reasonably tropical zone you will not be able to grow orchids outdoors. With the right arrangement in your home, you should be able to grow most usual orchid flower plants in your house.

While keeping the orchid flower in an area where it can enjoy a warm climate is important, also important is the need to fix the humidity and airation in the room. Orchid flower plants will grow fast when they are in a room with an good amount of humidity. Keeping your orchid protected from drafts is also important as well. Do to their lack of ability to withstand drafts and their need for a high amount of humid, orchid flower plants often do well when placed in the bathroom.

You can not forget about light as well when searching a place for your orchid. While the orchid flower needs a good quantity of light to bloom, it is often hard to find this perfect spot. Many times the obvious choice, by a window, will make the plant exposed to too much airation. Orchid flower plants can also be grown under room light, and there are many good grow lights available that will fit into a traditional light socket.

By growing your orchid flower under lights, or at least having the light available, in case your place were you planned to put it does not work out, you will help keep your orchid flower happy. While the orchid flower may look demanding, it really is consistent in its requirements. Once you have prepared a plan to raise your flower, you will likely enjoy its showy blooms for years to come.

How can you define the best place for your orchid flower? While an orchid can live in not "that good" conditions, it is not likely to bloom in this case. If your flower is still green, has a big amount of leaves, and otherwise in good condition, but has yet to bloom, you may want to review its living conditions. Try to place your orchid flower to an area that is warmer, has more light, or a higher level of humidity. If these changes do not help, your orchid may need to be repotted.

Once you have created an action list to successfully raise orchid flower plants, you may want to add to your collections. With a plenty of commercial flower plants available, with many different characteristics, there is an orchid flower for all. Whether you deciding based on fragrance, bloom, or by just selecting the one you love more, orchid flower plants make a great choice for the experienced person , or the casual hobbyist.

an elevator to get from one story of the house to another? Well, now that you are older, that dream has probably gone by the wayside, leaving those kids of luxuries for the rich and famous. Well, all kidding aside, the addition to home elevators in your home is not as drastically expensive as one would think, and there are occasions (such as when a person is suddenly and permanently wheel chair bound) that the addition of a home elevator is not only desired, but also a necessity.

These elevators can built into your house while you are having a home built, or it can be built on as an addition if you desire so later on. The sky is really the limit for how you want the elevators in your home to look. It can simply be a standard look with metal doors, or it can be far more luxurious (and expensive) complete with wood paneling and tinted lighting. All home elevators companies will have a large selection of choices to fit your required needs. If your reason for having an elevator installed in your home is for health purposes, your elevator company will be able to make your elevator fit your exact specifications, including wheel tracks which will lock your wheels in place to keep your wheel chair from sliding as well as

Elevators for your home are generally built narrow, to accommodate only one to two people. Most have a maximum weight limit of 750 pounds. All states require that a land line be installed in every elevator for emergency purposes. Home elevators cannot be made in place of a stair case for fire code purposes. Are you a homeowner, looking for someone to take care of your home repairs? If you are, perhaps you should look to the Internet to help you locate the right contractor.

You can find contractors to renovate a home, redo the flooring, or build new extensions. The traditional way of looking for a contractor means you have to look for contacts in a print directory and then contact them one by one.

The problem with this approach is that it is very time consuming. After contac
ing a few companies, what you have achieved is that you have acquired just a handful of quotations. After that, you then proceed to compare the quotations and evaluate the companies. You finally approach the company that is most affordable and provide the best service.

Fortunately, the Internet now allows you to reach out to as many companies as possible. For example, you can visit a bidding website, and post your project details. Registration is free, and you do not have to worry about paying any fees. Once you have an account created, you can start posting your project. Include as much details as possible about your needs and wants. Doing this will enable contractors to provide you with more accurate quotations.

After the project has been posted, contractors will then bid on your project. The more bids your project receives the more options you have. You can view each bid individually, and at your own leisure. At the website, you will also be able to view the full company profile of the contractors.

One great advantage of posting your project on the website is that you get to enjoy a wide range of choices. That usually means that you get to choose to work with a contractor that not only offers great service, but competitive pricing as well. However, you should be mindful not to choose based on price alone. Instead, you should be very clear in your mind what a reasonable price should be. That way, you know whether the quotation is fair or not.

You should also read the reviews that are posted by other homeowners. Watch what others are saying about the companies. If a contractor has a track record of providing excellent service, you have a better chance of hiring a reliable contractor. On the other hand, if a contractor has a negative record, be sure to head for the opposite direction.

You want to be as careful as you can when selecting contractors. This is because once the project starts, there is no turning back. If the contractor gives you a lot of problems , there is very little you can do. Firing your contractor will only lead to spending more money.

That is why it is wise to look for contractors on the Internet. The Internet offers a level of transparency that is second to none. So start your search on a bidding website today.

Home phone wiring

เขียนโดย admin | 20:40

Doing your own home phone wiring can save a lot of money on labor costs. It's also fun to do and safe.

A person can really save a lot of money by doing his or her own labor in many areas, but residential phone wiring is where many homeowners feel more confident because of the low voltage wiring in phone systems.

Phone systems are different than electrical wiring systems in the fact that the electrical current for phones comes from the phone company. Phones use their own power.

It'
much easier to wire a home that still has the walls and ceilings exposed during the new construction. The newer type of cable used for phone and network systems is called Cat5 cable. It has eight wires inside of different colors. This is the cable that is most often used in new homes.

There are two methods of running a phone line. The older method is called a "daisy chain" and the newer method is called a "hub". A daisy chain wiring method starts at the box outside installed by the phone company. It runs in to the first phone jack and then on to the next phone jack in a chain manner. This uses less cable than the hub method.

The hub method has a line that runs from the box outside to a junction box that feeds each phone jack with a separate Cat5 cable. This uses more cable, but is more reliable over time.

The next step is to make circuit runs of cable from the hub to each phone jack. Almost every room in the house should have a phone jack. Phone jacks fit into regular electric boxes. These boxes should be the same height as electric outlets.

Be sure to secure the cables using a cable staple gun. This will make sure that the cable won't move or be cut while doing finish work. Remember to run the cable where it won't get hit with nails. Put protective plates over the cable where they could be cut.

It's also important to keep all Cat5 cables apart from power cables to avoid interference.

Next, run a cable from the hub to the outside power box installed by the phone company.

Once the cable runs are complete we can wire the cable to the hub and then on to each jack. We will wire all the phone jacks first.

We will use only two wires inside the Cat5 cable for each phone line. The first two will be blue/white and white/blue wires.  The phone jack or mod jack will have four, six, or eight screws. We only need to worry about the screws with the red and green wires under them. The blue wire with white stripes will attach to the red screw. The white wire with blue stripes will attach to the green screw. Once this is done, the jack can be secured into the electrical box and a cover can be put on it.

The other ends of the Cat5 cables will need to be wired to the hub using the same color coding. If there aren't enough red or green screws for each phone jack, you can always attach two or more of the blue/white wires to one red screw. You can do the same with the white\blue wires and a green screw.

Finally , the Cat5 cable that runs from the hub to the box outside will need to be connected. The box from the phone company will be coded using the blue\ white and white\blue wires. Just attach each wire to the corresponding color and the job is finished.

Test each phone jack with a phone and cable for a dial tone. Make sure all covers are put back on to all the electric boxes and mod jacks.

Wiring a home network

Learn how to wire a home network that is functional and inexpensive.

Most new homes have wiring for networks available as part of the modern and normal functionality and not as an extra component for making the home worth more. Home networks are a standard part of the electrical system.

A home should have data ports in every livable room in the house. Bathrooms and pantries probably don't need data ports. A data port is where you connect your computer patch cable so you can have Internet or access to family networks.

Wireless networks are popular because they don't require all the cable to each room, but most communications technicians like myself strongly discourage the use of wireless networks due to lack of privacy and neighbors stealing free Internet from you.

The cable we use in home networks is called Cat5 cable. It has eight wires inside of different colors. We will need to find out which room we want our main network hub to be in. I prefer to have a utility room with access to a distribution panel or junction box for cable TV, phone systems, home security, and home network systems all together.

Most home network hubs also have a router for Internet access. Without the Internet, a network hub still gives all computers in the home the option to be a part of the family network.

We will need to run Cat5 from the hub to each data port in each room and secure the wires with staples onto the framing of the walls. The data ports fit into regular electrical boxes used for outlets and light switches. The Cat5 needs to terminate into an electrical box with about ten inches of cable to spare.

Each data port will be wired according to a corresponding color with the wires in the Cat5. These data ports are called Mod jacks and they will be a punch down block that you insert the wires into and make a good connection.

This mod jack will plug into an electric box and a wall plate will fit over it so it looks like part of the wall.

The other end of the cable is where it connects to the network hub. We will need to terminate this cable with an RJ-45 connector. This is the connector that plugs into the network port on computers and data ports. We need to have a special tool that presses all the wires in place inside the connector.

We can gently scribe a ring around the Cat5 cable with a utility knife to peel the plastic coating away from the wires about a half-inch from the end. The wires will need to be in the exact order before we slide them into the connector.

With the connector tab down, the wires need to start from left to right as follows:

Brown\white, White\brown, Green\white, White\blue, Blue\white, White\green,  Orange\white, White\orange

In this order , push the wires so they gently fill the slot into the connector and then use the punch down tool to make a perfect seal. You can buy a pair of inexpensive line testers to make sure that all the cable runs are functional.

Put all wall plates on and connect the hub to the Internet and to all the computers on the network.

Q: How cool would it be to have a customized garage storage solution of your very own? A: Way cool! To be able to mix and match cabinets and wall hook units the way you want to with a product made out of a high density polyethylene that doesn't require painting or other maintenance is a dream made true by Garagemaid. Truly innovative do-it-yourself garage storage!

Garage storage is something every home owner must come to terms with at some point. Our lives are just smack full of stu
f. Stuff that has to go somewhere. Even though it's stuff that we hardly ever use or really even need, we just seem to keep hanging on to it year after year. Of course, there are lots of things we do need to access and use on a regular, albeit infrequent, basis. For example, Christmas does come around every year, so those boxes and boxes of decorations have to be accessible and ready to rock 'n roll when it's time to deck the halls. And all that sports and fishing equipment can't be buried somewhere when you need it. Lucky for home owners, effective do-it-yourself garage storage solutions are available from companies like Garagemaid. Consider the following:

Garagemaid has innovative garage storage systems that utilize interlocking connectors that are designed into each part. This means that there is no need to fuss with little fasteners that often just make assembly frustrating. The interlocking connectors add a lot of stability to the units, while at the same time making installation and assembly a snap. Once the unit is put together it's just a matter of attaching it to the studs of the wall for a great garage storage system.

One of the nice things about Garagemaid products is that they are made out of a high density polyethylene so it is virtually impervious to problems that often arise from wood products when they get wet. With high density polyethylene, things like rot, rust, or cracking are avoided all together. It is an easily cleanable product that doesn't have to be painted to look good.

Finally, the modular aspect of this system allows a variety of combinations that allow a more custom fit for your garage storage needs. You might start out with their basic storage cabinet that measures 84" tall x 22" wide. This has four adjustable shelves and a door on the upper part of the cabinet. The bottom part allows you to use up to four optional drawers. If you need additional , and baskets together anyone can design and implement their own customized garage storage solution in minutes. Then you will be able to find anything you need at any time.

There has been an ongoing debate pertaining to the pros and cons of geothermal energy.

Before we can begin to discuss the advantages and disadvantages, we need to have a clear understanding of what exactly geothermal energy is.

4,000 miles below the Earth's surface is incredibly hot. It is thought to be over 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit. While this temperature is extremely dangerous and must be avoided, if you were to drill about 3 or 4 miles below the Earth's surface, you
can find a hot rock that is far less dangerous, and it is at only 300 to 400 Fahrenheit. This rock and heat can be used as a constant source of heat but would prove to be very expensive.

Now while drilling and using this hot rock can be extremely expensive, there are other alternatives. In some places, only a few hundred feet below the surface there are areas that have combined this hot rock and underground water to produce hot water streams. This is the most economic source of heat below the earth and can be used in a number of ways. The heat can be used to heat homes, businesses and even run large farms or provide energy for greenhouses.

The constant source of geothermal energy comes with a number of benefits and a number of concerns. These pros and cons mostly relate to environmental issues, overall cost and reliability.

In terms of environmental effects, the impact of geothermal energy has more benefits than disadvantages. Geothermal facilities do not emit any emissions and on the whole, these factories take up far less space than any gas plants that are used for the same process. This is because the facilities do not require any underground pipelines to distribute fuel. Essentially geothermal energy is a universal contributor to a cleaner, safer and healthier environment.

On top of the environmental benefits, geothermal plants are not only more efficient but are also very reliable. The system is much simpler all around and there are a lot less problems that can occur in maintaining the facility. There is also no waste disposal and transport of fuel required to run the factory and produce energy.

The main con when discussing geothermal energy is the overall cost. The start up cost for geothermal power plants is quite substantial and this is the main argument against the energy source. However the truth is that this initial cost is often compensated for rather quickly as operation costs are extremely low in comparison to other sources of energy. The costs of drilling and maintaining these plants are also decreasing steadily.

The technology used for geothermal energy is constantly improving and geothermal plants are becoming more readily available. There is no denying the technology involved and once we continue to lower the overall cost , there will be no limit to the benefits that we can take advantage of through the use of geothermal energy.

When people first think of a roaring fireplace, they often picture a cute little cabin and a burning log right in the middle of a cozy room.

Often when thinking about or discussing fireplaces, people forget to consider an outdoor fireplace in the middle of a patio or in a backyard. The truth is, these can often be some of the most spectacular fireplaces you can build and can serve a number of purposes. While a fireplace in your home can offer a cozy place to cuddle and a nice sourc
of heat, an outdoor fireplace can provide even more benefits. There is a vast array of purposes that an outdoor fireplace can be used for and there is an even greater number of styles and designs you can incorporate to give your home that special elegant feeling.

When you first begin to consider an outdoor fireplace, you should put same careful planning into your decisions. When a fireplace of this style is added to your yard, it can extend the space of your house a great deal and when positioned properly it can be used all year round. You can almost instantly turn your bland, bare backyard into a unique and comfortable setting as long as you plan and build your outdoor fireplace appropriately. So here are some important planning tips that you should consider before making a final decision on an outdoor fireplace of your very own.

First things first, you need to research and determine all the building codes that are designated and applied to your surrounding area. Some communities will have very strict rules and regulations regarding and others will be extremely relaxed and lenient. It is in your best interest to call your local municipal buildings and find out the exact regulations before you get your heart set on a certain design or placement for your outdoor fireplace. If you skip this step, you could be out a lot of money as you may be forced to remove the structure after you have just spent the money to put it all together.

In some cases you may have to apply for a permit before you can add any sort of structure to your yard. You should ensure that you have all the necessary application forms and information regarding these policies. You can never be too safe when it comes to areas of this matter, and you will be far better off in the long run if you take all the necessary precautions.

Once you have taken all the preliminary steps you need to choose which style will best suit your home and your tastes. Stone fireplaces are some of the most popular units available these days but there are a number of other options that you can consider. While stone units are usually self contained, you may want to look into a more open concept and take advantage of some of the benefits that brick fire pits can offer you in terms of a non traditional set up. While there are many choices when it comes to design, once you choose one and build it , it is very difficult to make any changes or adaptations. So it is strongly suggested that you do a lot of research and be positive you are in love with a certain unit before you come to a final decision.

Wicker furniture is an elegant, timeless way to add character to nearly any room of a home.

It can be stained or painted to match existing decors, and is an excellent addition to a sun room or enclosed patio. Outdoor patios with wicker furniture evoke thoughts of summer gatherings to bring warmth to occasions.

Wicker is a term that refers to the specific method of creating furniture. While the word usually brings to mind rattan or reed, wicker furniture can be made of a
y substance that is pliable enough to bend and strong enough to maintain a woven shape when dry. Such furniture is commonly constructed of rattan, reed, bamboo, willow or any number of synthetic fibres. These rods are typically steamed, woven into place and left to dry, resulting in a durable and light piece of furniture.

The most common reference to wicker is rattan. This wood comes from a tree-like vine in tropical climates and is considered one of the hardest woods available. Because it grows straight, rather than in rings as trees do, rattan is considerably more durable. This durability makes rattan furniture some of the longest lasting and most sought after wicker furniture available.

Quality wicker furniture will have a coating over the wood, whether it is painted or not. This coating provides additional toughness to the wood as it prevents chipping and scratching. It is also a benefit to wicker furniture that is destined for an outdoor patio; the coating will repel most of the moisture it comes in contact with and prevent rot and warping.

Wicker is a preferred type of furniture for its lightweight and durable construction. The woven patterns not only provide a unique and visually appealing centerpiece for a room, but offer comfortable seating without adding bulk to the d้cor. A wicker piece can also be easily moved from one spot to another, making it perfect for "rec rooms" or rooms means for entertaining.

When styles change, wicker is easily updated. Not only is it a cinch to care for and clean, it can easily be repainted to match a newly updated motif. One or more colors can be used to match the existing furniture to the new design. This versatility has made wicker a mainstay in decorating, as owners do not need to worry about investing too much in furniture that will simply go out of style.

High quality wicker furniture is an excellent investment for many different decorating styles. Its versatility, durability and airy design allow it to be anything from a neutral, functional piece in a larger room to a more dramatic , eye catching centerpiece that draws the attention of guests. The added benefit of its mobility makes it perfect for individuals who often need to move furniture from one room to another to accommodate guests.

If you are looking into upgrading your furnishings in and around your home, you need to look closely into wicker furniture.

Wicker can be an oft-ignored material when people first start to think of purchasing accessories for your home, but it can be a natural way to beautify your home.

When it comes to wicker furniture, you have a number of options available to you as wicker is very durable and can be formed into many different things such as tables, seats, stools, sof
s and chairs among other things. While you can choose from a wide range of styles and designs, you are often limited in terms of color when purchasing wicker furniture.

Furnishings made from wicker can most often only be found in their natural color of dull yellow or a light brown. It is possible to see some furniture dyed different colors, but the appeal of wicker is often its natural elegance.

Wicker furniture is very tough and can last for a very long time. It can be left outside and it wont rust or become damaged due to harsh weather. There really is no maintenance required with wicker furniture and cleaning it proves to be an absolute breeze. Some wicker sets will come with added cushions or pillows that can usually just be run through a washing machine while the actual wicker components only need to be wiped with a damp cloth in order to remove any dust build up over time. Ultimately wicker furniture can last for years without any real hard to perform maintenance or cleaning.

On top of wicker furniture, you should also look into synthetic wicker furniture. While the two are very similar, synthetic wicker can offer you an additional number of benefits and still supply all the hassle free d้cor that wicker does. The plastic that is inherent within synthetic wicker furniture does not rest and often requires even less cleaning than the wicker furniture previously discussed. Also, unlike wicker, synthetic wicker can be dyed any number of colors and molded into a vast array of designs and models. It often can look a lot more modern and new and can really spice up the look of any room.

Synthetic wicker furniture is also very versatile and can be molded into a number of designs and patterns that normal plastic simply can not. Plastic furniture can often be boring and mundane, but synthetic wicker can bring you all the benefits of plastic and still offer a modern yet elegant look to your home. As if all the convenience and beauty was not enough , synthetic wicker furniture is also extremely affordable when compared to a number of other furnishing materials that you may be considering.

Steps and lawn care tips to do to achieve a healthy beautiful lush green lawn.

21 Lawn Care Tips:

1. Remove the debris –
One of the best things that you can do to get your lawn in shape
for the coming season is the remove any debris; such as branches and rocks that may have accumulated over the winter. Not only will this help give your grass room to grow, but it will also prevent safety hazards once mowing season begins.

2. Do not over f ertilize with nitrogen –
Traditionally, many people would
prepare their lawn with high amounts of nitrogen-based fertilizer in the spring.  Unfortunately, this often leads to a significant amount of damage to the grass.  If you are going to use nitrogen, be sure to wait until you have mowed at least a few times before you fertilize with nitrogen and wait until there will no longer be frost on the ground.

3. Use controlled release fertilizers –
If you are going to use a fertilizer in the spring, then you are best to look for one that contains nutrients that are released slowly over time, rather than all at once.  You should also consider fertilizing over time, so that you help your grass to grow slowly rather than all at once.

4. May 1st is a good date to start weeding out crabgrass –
In most areas of the country, crabgrass does not start to root until around the middle of May. Therefore, if you are going to apply an anti-crabgrass formula to your lawn it is a good idea to begin doing so around May 1st. Of course, this is not set in stone and if your climate is unusually warm or you notice crabgrass developing earlier, you can feel free to apply the formula earlier in the year.

5. Seed your lawn in the fall, not in the spring –
Although many people do prefer to seed their lawn in the spring, it is not as optimal as seeding in the fall.  Although it may seem that new grass would have a hard time surviving the winter, it is actually more at risk of damage from the high heat and sunlight of summer.  Therefore, consider seeding your lawn before winter this year!

6. For best results, use a blended fertilizer –
A high-quality fertilizer should contain a small amount of nitrogen that is non-water soluble, potash and phosphate.  The key to a balanced formula is knowing how much of each of the ingredients your lawn really needs.  There are also other minerals that are frequently added to fertilizers - some lawns require these and some do not.  Depending on your soil type, geographic
location and climate, the fertilizer that you choose needs to contain the right amount of each nutrient. Check with your local gardening center to learn more.

7. The darker your lawn color, the better –
Do you realize that your goal should be to get your lawn to the darkest possible color?  With this goal in mind, you will have a way to determine how well your lawn and garden preparations are working. Of course, it may take you several seasons to determine the correct approach, but in the end your efforts will be rewarded.

8. Consider a mechanical seeder for best results –
If you find yourself needing to seed or re-seed your lawn, it may be more work than you are anticipating.  Therefore, a mechanical seed spreader may be an investment worth making. Or, consider renting one from a local lawn care center.  There are also seed sprayers, however they are not recommended for inexperienced landscapers because of the precision that must be applied to achieve proper coverage.

9. If you want f ast results on your lawn this season, consider sodding -
If you don't know what sod is, you probably have seen it and don't realize it!  Sod is simply instant grass.  You can purchase sod in squares or rolls, or you can hire a professional to create your lawn.  Sodding is best done in the late spring.

10. Find out how short you should be cutting your grass –
Before the mowing season begins, you should take care to find out what the best height is for your lawn. Most people who experience problems with their lawn burning are cutting it too short. And, those whose lawns get out of control between mowing may not be going low enough. A good rule to keep in mind is that you should never mow more than 1/3 of the visible grass when you are mowing in order to avoid damaging the blades.

11. Prepare a watering schedule –
Do you realize that when you water your lawn several times a day in short intervals, you may not be helping your grass to grow? Studies have shown that the best watering technique is to water for an extended period of time at infrequent intervals. Much like nature waters your lawn with rainfall.
For example, if you live in an area with clay soil you really need to water for about 5 hours at a time a few days a week.  Most people do not water this way, but for the best results this is what you should do.

12. Don't skip spring lawn and garden preparation –
If for some reason you opt not to do preventative spring maintenance on your lawn and gardens, you will undoubtedly pay for it for the rest of the year!  While you may be able to take some shortcuts, be sure not to completely skip this important step.

13. Never skip raking –
It is just as important to rake your lawn in the spring as it is in the fall.  Thatch is what accumulates on your lawn during the winter to protect the roots from snow and freezing temperatures.  This thatch must be removed in order to
keep your lawn healthy.  Pros will tell you that even a half of an inch of thatch
accumulating can cause serious problems with your lawn.  So, don't skip this
important lawn care step!

14. Raking can show signs of more serious problems –
You should rake your lawn deeply every spring, because when you do you are not only removing dangerous build-up, but you are also freeing any tangled grass blades.  Additionally, if your lawn has been affected by snow mold or other problems over the winter, raking may eliminate the eventuality of bare patches.

15. Aeration is important when traff ic is high –
If you have a high traffic lawn - or even just some spots that get a lot of foot traffic - you should aerate every spring to avoid a condition known as compaction.  If you see a significant amount of moss build up in your lawn, then this is a sign that your lawn could be in need of aeration. You can get an aeration tool that is inexpensive at your local lawn and garden store.

16. Keep an eye out for moss –
If you see a significant build up of moss in and around your lawn and garden, this could indicate significant problems including a need for aeration or a need to combat high acid levels in the soil.  Both are simple procedures,
which will not require a significant investment of time. However, it is important to address the problems as soon as possible to get your lawn healthy for the coming season.

17. Watch for bare spots –
If you see bare spots developing throughout your lawn as a result of your pets, or high traffic, you can do what is called overseeding. Basically, you will be placing seed in the bare spots to sprout new growth.  The best time to do
this is late in the fall, when temperatures are mild and the sun is not as hot as in the spring and summer.

18. Use preemergent herbicides –
The difference between conventional herbicides and preemergent herbicides is that while conventional herbicides kill weeds as they are located, preemergent herbicides treat your lawn to prevent the growth of weeds, crabgrass and other irritants from the time of their application. There is a specific window of time in which the herbicides are effective when applied, check with your local lawn care center to determine the best time for your specific region.

19. Aerate first and then apply chemicals –
If you intend to aerate your lawn or garden, do so prior to applying any chemicals, herbicides or fertilizers.  Otherwise, you will be wasting the chemicals.  Also, herbicides form a blanketing shield over the soil. Aeration will puncture this blanket, which may lead to problems.

20. Be on the lookout for dandelions –
Dandelions are probably the largest lawn pest known to man.  If you want to keep them from spreading once they begin to appear, snap off the head of the flower before it turns to seed.  Otherwise, you can expect to have a sea of yellow blanketing your lawn all summer long. You can treat dandelions upon emergence with a spot killer. Preemergent herbicides are generally ineffective
against dandelions.

21. Check out your mower –
Spring is a good time to perform preventative maintenance on your mower, and to make sure that it is working in optimal condition. At the same time , you can take a few minutes to check your other landscaping tools to ensure that they are in good repair for the coming season.

Instead of looking at your house as a whole, which, if your home is extremely cluttered the task can seem rather daunting, break up your rooms into individual projects. That way, you will not feel overwhelmed at the thought of how much you have to do and you will be able to really think out a game plan for each room.

No one likes a house full of clutter, yet so many times life and activities get in the way of being able to find the time to organize your home and declutter. Instead o
looking at your house as a whole, which, if your home is extremely cluttered the task can seem rather daunting, break up your rooms into individual projects. That way, you will not feel overwhelmed at the thought of how much you have to do and you will be able to really think out a game plan for each room and put your entire focus on it, one room at a time.

The best way to start to declutter your house is to choose which rooms are in the most need for organization and space. Once you do that, write your plan-of-action out and learn to delegate some of the responsibility to your family members. Send your hubby off to organize the garage. Chances are, you won't see him for the rest of the day, which may turn out to be a blessing in disguise!

In whatever room ! you are decluttering, the main focus is to give everything a place and to get rid of unnecessary things. Excess papers such as old magazines, newspapers, old homework assignments can pile up fast and cover up a tabletop or counter quickly. Recycling these papers can provide instant space. Grab a manila envelope and label it "Coupons" to throw all of your clippings into. Add another for "Take Out Menus". File these envelopes in a drawer. Go through all of your pens to see which ones work. Obviously, get rid of the ones that the ink has dried in and place them all in a drawer or in a mug to stay organized.

If you want to declutter a closet, start by going through the clothes that you no longer wear, are outdated, or don't fit you anymore. Giving them away to charity is a great way to declutter and do something positive for the community. Organize your closet by putting all articles of clothing in their own areas; sweaters, pants, shirts, etc. In order to stay organ! ized , make sure you refold or re-hang your clothing when you ! are fini shed wearing them.

It is not difficult to declutter your home. Take a weekend and put your mind to it. You will feel so much better when you look around your house and see a clean and organized environment clear from clutter!

Are you looking for a fun and temporary splash of color to spice up your garden or landscape?  Consider an annual climbing vine.  Most grow quickly and boast beautiful blooms.  We'll take a look at the top 10 most popular annual climbing vines for you to consider in your garden.

Annual climbing vines are a great way to add a splash of color to your garden.  Most annual climbers grow quickly, feature colorful, showy flowers, and then die off and can be easily removed in the fal
.  Planting an annual vine is also a great way to test out the idea of having a permanent climber in a certain location.  If you like having a climber in that spot after a season or two, you can go ahead and plant a perennial climbing plant that will come back year after year.

The following is a list of the top 10 annual climbing vines you should consider for your garden or landscape.

1. Sweet Pea
Sweet pea is a very popular climbing plant that comes in literally hundreds of varieties to choose from.  Sweet pea does not grow extremely large; it will climb to approximately 6 feet tall in a season's time.  It does prefer cool temperatures and it needs plenty of moisture to thrive.  Sweet pea climbers will reward you with col! orful blooms all summer long.

2. Nasturtium
Nasturtium is a good vining choice if you want to cover a trellis, pergola, or arbor.  Nasturtium is considered the climber of choice for black thumb gardeners; it literally thrives on neglect.  It will grow in poor soil conditions and doesn't require a lot of sunlight or moisture.  Nasturtium will bloom with beautiful and fragrant flowers in the summertime.

3. Morning Glory
Morning glory is a beautiful climbing plant that flowers profusely during the morning hours.  The color of the blooms will vary, depending on the variety planted.  Morning glory does require a sunny location, though it will grow well in almost any soil type.

4. Moonflower
Moonflower is a great climber for screening purposes.  It grows very rapidly and blooms profusely in poor soil conditions.  Interestingly enough, if you plant moonflower in soil that is too fertile, it will not produce blooms.  Moonflower vines ! are known for their large white flowers that bloom during the ! nighttim e hours.

5. Black-eyed Susan
It's true that black-eyed susan is a ground flower, but it is also available in a vining variety that is good for use as a ground cover.  While it is not a good choice for growing up trellises or other garden structures, black-eyed susan vines are very striking when planted in hanging baskets and allowed to drape down.  One thing to keep in mind, black-eyed susan does require a long growing season, and is not recommended in colder climates.  Temperatures below 50 degrees will kill it quickly.

6. Cardinal Climber
Cardinal climber is akin to morning glory, coming from the same botanical family.  Like its cousin, cardinal climber is a vigorous grower, potentially growing up to 20 feet in a single season.  Cardinal climbers' two inch red flowers will bloom all summer long.

7. Balloon Vine
Balloon vine is considered to be an annual vine in the north, but is sometimes grown as a perennial in warmer, south! ern climates.  It does require sun, and is ideal for use as a screening plant.  Balloon vine features small, almost unnoticeable white flowers.

8. Hyacinth Bean
Hyacinth bean, sometimes mistaken as sweet pea, is another very vigorous climber, often scaling 20-30 feet in a growing season.  There are many varieties available, and this is a good choice for covering large trellises or fences.  Hyacinth blooms with purple or white flowers in the summertime.

9. Dutchman's Pipe
Dutchman's pipe is native to the eastern United States, and can easily grow to cover an area 15 feet tall by 20 feet wide in one growing season.  It does not boast showy flowers like some other climbers; however, it grows easily, even in the shade.  Be sure to give Dutchman's pipe plenty of space, as it will crowd out other plants that are too close.

10. Climbing Snapdragon
Climbing snapdragons are an attractive choice for a trellis cover , and can also be use! d to drape from window boxes or hanging baskets.  They will bl! oom from late spring through the summer with flowers that resemble a traditional snapdragon's blooms.

It is very important to prioritize your rooms by necessity, work slowly but diligently and stay focused at the task on hand. Always remember the motto that 4 hands are better than two!

When it comes to decluttering your home, baby steps is the way to go. An extremely disorganized home can be quite an overwhelming task to undertake. It is very important to prioritize your rooms by necessity, work slowly but diligently and stay focused at the task on hand. Recruiting willing family me
bers or friends to help you will make the decluttering a little less daunting and a lot more fun. Always remember the motto that 4 hands are better than two!

To begin decluttering your home, start with the rooms that require the most attention. That can be a different room for every person, but the majority of reports say that the main rooms of a house such as the living room, kitchen and bathrooms are the most cluttered.  Once you have chosen which room to tackle first, take on one task at a time. Whether it is organizing and filing away paperwork, cleaning out drawers or removing magnets and take-out menus off of a refrigerator, doing on! e task at a time will help you to only remain focused on accomplishing one thing before moving on to the next project.

In any room of your home, make three piles: one to keep, one to donate and the other to toss. Donating items to a charity will make you feel good about giving to a reputable cause and you will feel great throwing away any broken, worn out or unused items. When you have divided everything into the three categories, you will be surprised at what little you have in your "keep" pile. This process can be done in any room; your closet, kitchen, bathroom or playroom. When you are in the process of decluttering your home and you are working on your closet, ask yourself a couple of key questions:

• When was the last time you wore that article of clothing?
• Does it still fit?
• Is there anything missing from the article of clothing (buttons, broken zipper, etc.)

If you can answer those questions honestly , you will feel m! uch better about getting rid of the items in your closet and y! ou will be amazed at how clean and organized your closet stays when you eliminate a huge amount of unworn clothing. Decluttering your home can be a very cleansing experience.

Metrosideros or Pohutukawa, as an evergreen tree or large shrub, is both a useful screening plant, and a beautifully decorative landscape bush. Its tolerance of drought, pests and disease, make it a must for many gardens in dry, Mediterranean climates.

Metrosideros is the botanical name for a genus of landscape trees and large shrubs known commonly by its Maori name as Pohutukawa, or New Zealand Christmas Tree. As a large evergreen plant, it is ideal for screening purposes, but is also highly ornamental with its fine form, at
ractive, leathery foliage, and showy annual flowers.

Pohutukawa is relatively drought tolerant, thriving on as little as 200mm (8in) of additional irrigation in near desert climates that receive no more than 250mm of rainfall a year. In semi arid Mediterranean climates that receive some 400mm (16in) of annual rainfall, it can get by on less water, but will look better for the occasional deep soaking in the summer.

It is also tolerant of wind and sea spray, is largely unaffected by pests and disease, although it is unsuited to areas that have prolonged frosts and chill. Metrosideros grows well in most soils, including the alkaline ones typical of many dry climates, providing there is reasonable drainage. It is not a plant for the impatient however, as it grows slowly during the first few years. The patient gardener however will be rewarded with a beautiful and dependable landscape plant.

Combinations and Associations

With which trees and bushes does the New Zealand Christmas tree associate comfortably? Its oval-shaped foliage is medium in size and texture and so it fits in well with landscape bushes with similar foliage such as Pittosporum and Viburnum. It is especially good with another New Zealand native – Coprosma repens whose varieties that have variegated or copper leaves, add a gentle contrast to the light-green foliage of the Metrosideros.

Thought should also be given to how the plant combines with trees that are larger than it is, and with low-growing shrubs as well. With this in mind, it combines superbly with tall Eucalypts and with small bushes such as Green Island Ficus, Dwarf Pittosporum, ("Wheeler's Dwarf") and Raphiolepis.

Pohutukawa, as a member of the Myrtle plant family, (Myrtaceae) has flowers with the prominent stamens typical of that botanical family. Therefore, it links up with other Myrtaceae plants like Syzygium, Myrtle, Acmena, and Callistemon.

Metrosideros is so attractive and useful as a screening plant , and is so adaptable to the arid conditions prevailing in Mediterranean climates (excluding very cold areas) that dry climate gardeners can hardly afford to ignore it.
