Summer squash such as zucchini is a popular choice. Winter squashes such as acorn or butternut squash are harvested later in the fall and have a long shelf life when stored in cool, dry conditions.

Peas and Beans:
Peas are a cool season crop that should be started as early as possible in the spring, after the last frost. Most types of peas are climbing vines, which means you'll need to provide some type of support such as a small trellis. Beans are available in both pole (climbing) and bush varieties, depending on how much space you have and what your needs are. Depending on the variety of peas and beans you choose, some will require shelling, meaning that the outer hull must be removed and discarded before consumption. Other peas and beans such as snow or sugar peas and green beans have edible pods.

Peppers:
Peppers are another popular choice for home vegetable gardening, especially because they can be a very expensive produce item to buy in the grocery store. The most important thing to remember about growing peppers is that they require plenty of warm weather. If you live in a northern climate with cooler, shorter summers, then peppers probably aren't the plant for you. Peppers require at least 6-8 weeks of very hot temperatures in order to produce reliably. Good fertilization is also important for the best yields. Once the plant is established, be sure to choose a fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium rather than one with too much nitrogen.

In a school garden, there are some plants that should be removed on safety grounds, and others that can and should be tolerated. Here is a guide for the perplexed schoolteacher.

There is hardly a plant in the world that someone somewhere cannot object to for any particular reason. Plants can be poisonous, viciously thorny or allergenic. Many attract bees or encourage unwanted critters to lurk in the undergrowth.

A head teacher rightly concerned for the safety of the children and staff, and perhaps visualizing a na
ty lawsuit in the future, might be forgiven for nagging the maintenance staff to remove much existing plant material, and discouraging the further development of a garden.

This would be a great pity, as not only is a garden in itself so beneficial to a school, but contains within it, educational potential of unlimited and perhaps undervalued scope. On what then should the school authorities focus their concern, and on what matters can they afford to exercise a more lenient approach?

Poisonous and allergenic plants

A clear distinction should be drawn between the two. Some people are allergic to certain plant species such as Olive and Cypress trees, while a tiny minority can be sensitive to grasses. Clearly to prohibit a plant on such grounds would be effectively to exclude all plants from the school grounds. Hay fever after all is caused by pollen.

Poisonous plants are another matter. These are plants whose toxic levels are so high that they really do threaten the health and in some cases the life of anyone who ingests them. Nerium Oleander is a case in point, and should be absolutely banned from the school. An inventory of existing and proposed species should be gathered and examined, and poisonous plants removed.

Spiky and thorny plants

This where common sense has to come into play. To exclude all thorny plants could seriously deplete the range of species available. Many excellent garden mainstays, such as roses for instance, possess thorns. However, there are some plants that are so dangerous, especially if planted by paths and narrow entryways, that they amount to the proverbial accident waiting to happen. The worst case is the date palm, Phoenix dactilifera. I personally know a five-year-old boy suffering more than one year on from a stab wound he received from a date palm leaf. Other examples include the horrific spikes of Yucca and the vicious thorns of Bougainvillea. Just think what might happen if a child runs into a Yucca bush, sitting nicely at eye level.

Plants that attract wild life

It is quite likely that a concerned parent, visiting the school on open day, might point out that a certain plant attracts bees and is therefore dangerous. It should be remembered though, that a large number of flowering plants attract bees, anxious to lap up the nectar contained in the flowers. Taken to its logical conclusion, virtually all plants that bloom would be banned.

In fact, the garden should be attracting to it as much wild life as possible. This is mainly achieved by desisting from applying pesticides and chemical fertilizers. In addition, certain plants can be chosen precisely because they attract organisms like butterflies and hummingbirds. The Pineapple Guava, Feijoa sellowiana, is a fine choice in this regard, because not only is it a lovely ornamental shrub with edible fruit, but it attracts hummingbirds as well.

Trees shrubs and flowers

It is unnecessary to reject deciduous trees and shrubs on the grounds that they will litter the pavement. There is not a tree in the world that does not litter to some extent, and some evergreens are actually more of a nuisance. A deciduous tree is an essential educational element in the school grounds, as its anatomical changes through the year can be monitored and recorded by the schoolchildren.

Finally, for practical purposes, flower color is best provided by trees and shrubs, with annual flowers and possibly perennials too, excluded in favor of herbs and vegetable beds. Perhaps these are not as pretty as a flowerbed, but the type of horticulture involved is less consumerist and more sustainable in a school situation, and possibly more educational, in the wider meaning of the term as well.

Butterfly gardening is not only a joy, it is one way that you can help restore declining butterfly populations. Simply adding a few new plants to your backyard may attract dozens of different butterflies, according to landscape designers at the University of Guelph.

Butterflies, like honeybees, are excellent pollinators and will help increase your flower, fruit and vegetable production if you provide them with a variety of flowers and shrubs. They are also beautiful to watch, and are sometimes called "flowers on
he wing."

- Begin by seeding part of your yard with a wildflower or butterfly seed mix, available through seed catalogues and garden centers. Wildflowers are a good food source for butterflies and their caterpillars.

- Choose simple flowers over double hybrids. They offer an easy-to-reach nectar source.

- Provide a broad range of flower colors. Some butterflies like oranges, reds and yellows while others are drawn toward white, purple or blue flowers.

- Arrange wildflowers and cultivated plants in clumps to make it easier for butterflies to identify them as a source of nectar.

- If caterpillars are destroying favorite plants, transfer them by hand to another food source. Avoid the use of pesticides, which can kill butterflies and other beneficial insects.

- Some common caterpillar food sources are asters, borage, chickweed, clover, crabgrass, hollyhocks, lupines, mallows, marigold, milkweed or butterfly weed, nasturtium, parsley,
pearly everlasting, ragweed, spicebush, thistle, violets and wisteria. Caterpillars also thrive on trees such as ash, birch, black locust, elm and oak.

- Annual nectar plants include ageratum, alyssum, candy tuft, dill, cosmos, pinks, pin cushion flower, verbena and zinnia.

- Common perennial nectar plants include chives, onions, pearly
everlasting, chamomile, butterfly weed, milkweeds, daisies, thistles, purple coneflower, sea holly, blanket flower,
lavender, marjoram, mints, moss phlox, sage, stonecrops, goldenrod, dandelion and valerian.

Remember that butterflies are cold-blooded insects that bask in the sun to warm their wings for flight and to orient themselves. They also need shelter from the wind, a source of
water, and partly shady areas provided by trees and shrubs.

Garden landscaping ideas are always handy when planning garden designs. Be it a flower garden, herb garden or even a water garden, there are some basic princpals you should follow.

How would you go about creating your perfect garden? What ideas do you have that you would like to see come alive. Do you fancy the idea of a country style cottage garden with narrow winding pathways and fruit trees or would you rather see a grand splendour of lights, colour and clean-cut modern lines? Regardless of style, the best garden designs
tem from those who inject personality into their landscaping ideas.

The first step is learning how to utilise the space you have. As the saying goes - it's the size you have but what you do with it that counts. There couldn't be a better statement in gardening terms. Many small town gardens have some truly stunning designs. In fact, in my town there is an annual 'secret gardens' day where local people open up their gardens for anyone to come and take a peak. There is also a prize for best three at the end of the day. It's a large affair and although the number grows each year, there are usually around 200 participants and many more visitors.

Gardening is often described as an art form. I am no artist but I do love to look out of my window and see my work in all its glory. I consider myself very lucky as I live in a small village near the town that overlooks nothing but fields and a few houses dotted around. My garden is not particularly large and is a rather boring rectangular shape but this didn't stop me creating a design that I am proud of. By using a rockery, a waterfall, curved flowerbeds, and small trees or bushes, it's very easy to add shape to your garden and disguise any boring lines. Color is a matter of personal choice but in my design I have opted for a just a small amount of color as I prefer a modern look with gravel, potted plants, and of course my herb garden. I wanted to create the perfect yet practical place to invite friends around for a barbeque or garden party. It is for this reason I chose to add my color in the form of lighting which I can use all year round and not worry about which plants will be in bloom.

When planning your garden design, start by writing a list of all the things you like. Are you one for barbeques? Do you like to cook with fresh herbs? Do you need a low maintenance option? Do you prefer dainty flowers or clean-cut modern lines with an organised look? If you have a family with young children you will obviously need to keep your garden design practical and allow somewhere for them to play.

After doing this, split your garden into at least two sections to incorporate all of your ideas. Just to note here, a good way of joining different sections of your garden seamlessly is with a pergola. They can usually be constructed by a competent D.I.Y'er, and a great look can be achieved at a reasonable price.
